Part 1:

The front line had been quiet all morning. Our stiff resistance during the fierce fight the night before had forced the Amis to pull back sometime during the very early morning. We reorganized, rearmed, resupplied, and fixed ourselves into our defenses. This position was of value to command and we were ordered to hold it by all means possible.

At around 0940 the silence was broken by the recognizable rumble of American armor. The Amis must have regrouped in the morning and received reinforcements. We all scurried to our positions and crouched down, awaiting the attack. As the rumbles got louder our anti-tank units prepped their guns and got ready to fire at whatever toys the Americans had brought to play with.

Preparing for the run ...

Discovered by Alexander Wilson in a Mississippi magnolia tree, the Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia) is a distinctively handsome bird. Magnolia trees hold little interest for these birds, though. One just happened to land upon one during migration when Alexander's eyes clapped upon it.

These are seasonally-monogamous warblers, and males put a great deal of effort into impressing lady warblers with their songs each spring. Once paired up, the young couple fashions a messy, loose nest (by bird standards, anyway) in low branches of dense forest. In it, three to five eggs are laid, and one wonders if the gentleman warbler is hoping for a boy or five with whom he can toss a football? Regardless, if he does have any sons, it will be a year before they show father's resplendent coloration.

I understand Trafalgar square in London has been cleared of pigeons. I urge the city to consult with them.

In the Mardin bazaar, Turkey, a couple of olive vendors prepare çakıstes (cracked olives). Green olives are cracked with a mallet so they split, but don't loose the stone. This helps curing brine flavoured with fresh herbs to penetrate the fruit. Note the jars of çakıstes, centre frame, which are eaten as meze (appetizers). The men allowed me to practice cracking a few olives, hence the smiling faces.

Preparing for night launch.

Since Xmas here is Jan 7th, we are still preparing. Naomi finally showing off her new man (blank MJ head I painted, on a taller wider body from Aliexpress, generic clothes don't fit him at all..), who is quite tall, thus handy in decorating a tree! Brooklyn loves to decorate, so no complaints from her. Little ones being little ones, cats being cats.

We're all flying today: San Francisco-London, London-Madrid, Madrid-Canary Islands. It's almost a full day of traveling between flight hours, time change and waits. I always get a little nervous when we fly but then I'm so tired I just want the torture to end soon...

I'm turning my comments off because I can't get to you in a few days. I just wanted to share this beauty, who just needs her wings to get to where she wants to go.

Edit: The comments are back on!
