Title/View : Palace of Culture and Science: interior view of the observation deck
Title : Palace of Culture and Science
Other title : Palac Kultury i Nauki w Warszawie; PKiN
Creator : Rudnev, Lev Vladimirovich, 1885-1956
Creator role : Architect
Date : 1952-1955
Current location : Warsaw, Mazowieckie, Poland
Description of work : A gift from Stalin built atop Warsaw center city ruins in the wake of World War II, the Palace of Culture and Science stands 230 meters tall and is visible throughout the city. It was completed in just three years and is a prime example of Socialist Realism, designed for large public gatherings as a place where ideology would be instilled. Soviet architects based the design on Stalinist architecture produced in Moscow during this same period, adding ornamental embellishments inspired by an official tour of nearby Polish cities and countryside. While Soviets thought the building light and airy, Varsovians generally viewed it as a bleak symbol of oppression. Today, “[a]mong the younger generation, the PKiN has shifted from being the most hated building in Poland to become a cult object, now that it is illuminated at night in changing colors and motifs” (Source: Jaeger, Falk. Next 3 Stadia: Warsaw, Bucharest, Kiev. Berlin: Jovis, 2012, p. 40). The building contains rentable office space, three theaters, a multi-room movie theater, as well as the Palace of Youth, the Museum of Technology, and the Council of Warsaw headquarters.

Amity is a dolphin that I see as the Queen of Sea World Australia. she's the leader of the non-preforming pod, since this park has a group of dolphins that does preform, and a group that doesn't, and the two groups live in separate pools. Amity is believed to be as old as 63 years old, though when i talked to one of her trainers, they said it's more likely somewhere between 55 and 58, though they wouldn't be surprised if she was in her sixties. whenever a dolphin is rescued and put in the non-preforming pool, Amity will IMMEDIATELY adopt them. if you know about captive killer whales, she's pretty much a Corky 2 in Dolphin form.
you can also see how large the pools are here. this is the larger of the three non-preforming pools. the pools are pretty much one very large, circle-ish shape with a gate splitting down the rough middle of the pool, and then that half is split again. those two smaller bits act as "hold pools" if a dolphin is being aggressive or problematic, or if a female is giving birth, she's put into the smaller pools with the gate between the two smaller pools opened up. if it's a first time mum, Amity's usually in there with her.

This is the cab I am making from the slab I cut off of the agate I dubbed the "New Tonto Plume" and uploaded on December 21, 2008. You can see it does have some potential and is the best plume agate I have found at that site, where plumes are fairly rare to find. (okay, so I put a little mineral oil on the suface to make it more presentable - that will have to do until I finish it - whenever that happens!)

Volotea (Southern Cross Aviaton) Boeing 717-2BL (cn 55191/5151) preforming a ferry flight from VCV to Milwaukee as SXA1055 seen on final for runway 19R at Milwaukee. This aircraft is an ex Midwest Express and MexicanaClick, and it now has a new life with Volotea in Spain. I am lucky enough to be spending 3 days at O'Hare and I drove up to MKE just to get this and went back down to ORD after its arrival.

The section is transverse to the fibre plane. A preform of short fibres has been infiltrated with the aluminium melt in a press. The preform is visible in the lower half of the image.
System
Al-Mg
Composition
Al, Mg 2.5 (wt%), with Al2O3 (5 vol%)
Reaction
N/A
Processing
A preform of d-alumina fibres has been squeeze-infiltrated with an aluminium melt.
Applications
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) offer high specific stiffness which can be retained to high temperatures. This makes them suitable for applications in the aerospace industry. They also offer controlled (or zero) thermal expansion coefficients, good wear resistance and good impact properties.
Sample preparation
The sample has been oxidised to provide colour contrast for different grain orientations.
Technique
Reflected light microscopy, polarised
