SERIES: In Your Own Backyard

We 'met' this group of Southern Ground Hornbills on our way from Shingwedzi to Letaba.

They werer very relaxed: feeding, preening, playing and keeping an eye on their youngster, who was strangely attracted to cars...

A great blue heron preens its neck feathers by running them through the tip of its bill.

Greys are constantly preening, sometimes a bit to their detriment. Interesting to watch, and impossible to stop.

I feel awful that I can't remember this kittys name! She so sweet and loves attention - she was in her glory with 30 strangers in her territory. Lisa has to put a bell on her so she doesn't catch the birds or chickens. She tolerated Lisa and me manhandling her while looking for a spay scar exceptionally well. She needs a forever home (hint, hint).

Tristan and Isolde had just polished off their dinner, and their evening routine requires a nice, leisurely preen to follow. They do just about everything together, and are very seldom apart.

This great blue heron kept preening. Each time I was ready to take the picture she would go back to work. Finally she decided it was time for her close-up.

Bald Eagle, National Eagle Center

Florida beaches are a paradise for bird photographers - thousands of shorebirds all very comfortable around people. This is a black-bellied plover (I think - could it be a golden plover?) taking good care of its feathers.

Took Bessie to a party where she preened for many admirers and we got to enjoy her out of the driveway.

The renfest had rescued parrots flying freely in an aviary. This poor little guy had a preening problem. Now that he has a healthy home, hopefully it will be sorted out.

Preen with my Father

This pigeon was not thrilled about my presence in its life, but it eventually settled down enough to start preening. I love to watch animals groom; they're so unselfconscious, and get into the oddest positions!

It's Preen. My brother. Actually he is a boy but I do wish to look him up with flowers, so it was done.

Preening female trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) taking a break from nesting duties on its breeding marsh in central-Minnesota near Little Falls.

Trumpeter swans are the heaviest North American bird, with maximum wing-spans exceeding 10 feet, rivaling that of California condors.

Currently increasing annually at nearly 15% per year in the Upper Midwest, and likely exceeding 40,000 individuals in Minnesota as of 2020, the restoration of trumpeters is one of the state's greatest conservation success stories.

I love the feather detail in this shot of a heron preening.

White-faced Heron

Ardea novaehollandiae

Self introduced from Australia the white-faced heron is now the most common heron having benefited from the widespread conversion of forest to farmland. They are found throughout Australia and also occur in Indonesia, New Guinea and New Caledonia.

White-faced herons can be found anywhere where there is water, from tidal mudflats and coastal reefs to moist grasslands and gardens. They feed on a wide variety of prey, including fish, insects and amphibians. Food is obtained in a variety of ways, such as walking and disturbing prey, searching among damp crevices or simply standing in the water and watching for movement.

This is a favorite perch for several large birds to do their preening.
