Nazca Boobies are the largest booby in the Galapagos Islands. They nested on cliffs and on islands without predators like iguanas that would eat the eggs.

A Northern Pintail enjoying a mild winter day preening and splashing. Pintails breed in the northern halves of the U.S., Europe and Asia and spend winters as far south as the equator. World travelers. I'm glad this one spent a little time with me.

I shot many pix of these two preening because they were doing exactly the same movements. It would make a great flip-book.
I photographed this male from the window of my vehicle as he preened all of this feathers. Unfortunately he was backlit by the early morning sun and I had no way to get a better angle without frightening him away.

The difference between male and female SBS - The male has two dangly yellow things underneath his bill while the female does not. The female also displays a yellow ring around her eye.

Normally warblers are constantly on the move and tough to film, let alone photograph. When this Northern Parula sat still for a little while I shot a short clip while she preened. There were a ton of people on the boardwalk last Sunday, thus the people talking in the background.

Peregrine Falcon, (probably) MCC adult female Hercules
You can see this bird has red legbands. Because she is sitting very near the prison nest, I'm guessing this is Hercules, but I'll have to make sure when I get her leg band numbers!
You can read more about it in my online field journal
Birds preen to maintain their feathers, to keep themselves warm and dry, to remove parasites, and to strengthen relationships.
a lot of the mute swans at slimbridge have been effectively grounded, some hatched this year from maturing into adult plumage, others from sloughing the old feathers, now its preening and test flight time.

Buddy, the female eclectus parrot, preening her feathers at the Berkshire Bird Paradise in Petersburg, NY.
Preening piping plover is not that uncommon to find. I have many images of plovers preening, but this one is my favorite preening pictures so far... I really like the pose, her head supported by the raised, fanned tail. visible eye, tucked up foot and that feather on the ground. This photo was taken at about 6:45 AM, about 90 minutes after the sunrise.
I was flat on the sandy beach enjoying this plover family, the two chicks were scurrying around. All of a sudden this mumma plover landed right in front of me. Not bothered with my presence, she started to preen. Light was good, angle was nice (I like slight side light as it adds depth to the picture) and that made my day :).

"Dave" the Red Throated Diver preening at City Quay, Dundee. The damage to his wing can be seen here.
I watched some young Catbirds preening as best as they could. They were still sporting many feathers still in their shafts. Fun to watch I am sure next time I see them they will look perfectly sleek and shadowy.
Walking down the steep hill into Polperro, Cornwall, I spotted this herring gull preening on a flat garage roof. I liked the natural lighting that gave the dark background to set the plumage off.

The scientific genus name is latinized Ancient Greek, from φαλακρός (phalakros, "bald") and κόραξ (korax, "raven"). This is often thought to refer to the creamy white patch on the cheeks of adult Great Cormorants, or the ornamental white head plumes prominent in Mediterranean birds of this species, but is certainly not a unifying characteristic of cormorants. "Cormorant" is a contraction derived from Latin corvus marinus, "sea raven". Indeed, "sea raven" or analogous terms were the usual terms for cormorants in Germanic languages until after the Middle Ages. The French explorer André Thévet commented in 1558 that "...the beak [is] similar to that of a cormorant or other corvid," which demonstrates that the erroneous belief that the birds were related to ravens lasted at least to the 16th century.
