This, changing color, mantis is finishing up a good meal and doing a little preening, while I bend down and try to capture the mood, under the dying leaf.

Great Blue Heron took its time preening in the marshy east end of Lake Alice (Wisconsin River) in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. I was able to perch my kayak in some nearby grasses for a front row seat that went unnoticed by the heron. Taken July 18, 2015 as light began to fade.

Cruising through the archives found a shot that seemed pretty good. This egret preens while nesting at the Alligator Farm natural rookery in Saint Augustine, Florida. The rookery is home to several thousand wading birds who migrate there each year to nest and hatch their young. Taken April 2008.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge at Fort Morgan

Columbus Zoo, OH. This crested crane would NOT stop preening and give me a good shot, so I finally said "Fine!" and took it anyway. Actually, I really like this... I love the lighting and the texture of the feathers appeals to me. I like that you have to really LOOK to see its face under its feather crown. Sometimes you just like a shot because it's... cool! I eventually did get a good shot of him if you want to look in my photostream.
