The first 'proper' wasp I've seen this year, by which I mean the kind that plague picnics in late summer. As I looked through the viewfinder, I realised it had some sort of prey - looks like a midge maybe - which it was tearing into. Possibly Vespula germanica?

22 Nov 2014. Went to shoot aircraft at sunset, and instead turned to this game of gridiron. Much more action. I think UTS had it.

Polar Bear ...
Ursus maritimus
Polar bears are survival specialists in an extreme environment—the Arctic, where winter lasts six months and temperatures average -30ºF. Their large body size, layers of thick, hollow hair, and three to four inches of blubber provide insulation from the cold, in and out of the water. The bears’ streamlined shape, partially webbed forepaws, and buoyant layer of blubber help make them champion swimmers.
Polar bears depend completely upon the sea for their existence, spending most of their time on the pack ice from which they hunt their preferred prey. The polar bear is a skillful predator of seals, with the help of a keen sense of smell, powerful paws, and sharp claws.

the crown-of-thorns starfish is the largest starfish in the world, with thorn-like spines sprouting all over its body for protection. if accidentally touched or stepped on, the starfish's long spines (which release a neurotoxin) are capable of inflicting great pain that can last for hours, as well as nausea and vomiting. the starfish is a coral reef predator and prey on coral polyps by climbing onto them, extruding its stomach over them, and releasing digestive enzymes to then absorb the liquefied tissue.
