At this precise moment it wasn't so easy. Therefore I asked myself a lot of questions. Did I bring enough water? Isn't it way too hot today to follow this trail? Do I really want to go up all the way to the rocky passage? What do I do if I can't get past the one very exposed spot of the trail? In the end I decided to hike on. Independent decision making, for better or worse.

The Folly Tower by D Meurig

"The precise date of construction is unknown but it is generally thought that the original tower was built around 1765 to 1770 by John Hanbury, a local landowner and ironmaster who owned Pontypool Park. The local name of The Folly was in use as far back as 1865 when the Free Press of Monmouthshire described it as:

"...an elevated spot where a Tower (formerly a Roman watch-tower) was many years since rebuilt as an observatory and which is popularly known as 'The Folly'."

It is thought the tower was renovated around 1831 by Capel Hanbury Leigh. This date is derived from a keystone from the doorway bearing an '1831' inscription. The tower provided a vantage point over the local area and quickly became popular and a well known feature of the area.

In May 1935 an estimated 15 to 20,000 people gathered at the Folly Tower to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V with the lighting of a bonfire.

However, the folly, being open to the elements, began to fall into a state of disrepair during the late 1930s. Pontypool Park Estate Office attached notices to the structure informing visitors of the potential dangers of falling masonry.

On July 9, 1940, the War Office ordered that, as a security measure under the Emergency Powers (Defence) Act 1939, the Folly be demolished. This was in the belief that its presence would be a landmark for the Luftwaffe seeking to raid the nearby Royal Ordnance Factory at ROF Glascoed to the east beyond Little Mill.

In 1946, Pontypool Chamber of Trade led the first campaign to rebuild the local landmark but the project stalled quickly. Another attempt in 1948 campaigns started to collect public donations to rebuild the Folly Tower. However, an attempt to get local council funding was thwarted during a local council meeting in July of that year, the council's priority at the time being post-war house building programmes in the local area.

At the beginning of 1990, a number of local historians and conservationists decided it was time to restore the Folly Tower to its former glory and a committee was set up to canvas various funding bodies as well as open negotiations with the National Park Authority. . . . "

Imposed silence can paradoxically be the fruit of loquacious musical creativity. Under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, all music was prohibited and instruments were burnt. The only singing tolerated was in certain precise contexts. But since 2001 this pressure has been relaxed for the whole Afghan population who has had to readapt to freedoms forgotten for so long. It was during this period of re-adaptation that film director Simon Broughton made the film « Breaking the silence » during a journey through this mutilated country. He was able to witness the new breath of Afghan music and intrigues and delights us with the discovery of this unusual culture. The story begins just after the fall of the Taliban regime, after 25 years of armed fighting. It is the historical moment when the population rediscovers the normality of musical freedom and must relearn to play their traditional instruments and work on reconstructing all the culture which had been locked away from them.

Following the screening of this documentary, Muziekpublique has arranged a musical interlude when you can meet and listen to the sounds of Daud Khan’s rabâb. This Middle-Eastern string instrument has not only survived Taliban censorship but has also met the challenge of evolving creatively towards originality whilst keeping in line with its tradition. A great success for Daud Khan who will prove this to you during this theme evening which promises to be both intense and deeply moving.

Peníscola (Valencian: [peˈniskola]) or Peñíscola (Spanish: [peˈɲiskola]), anglicised as Peniscola, is a municipality in the province of Castellón, Valencian Community, Spain. The town is located on the Costa del Azahar, north of the Serra d'Irta along the Mediterranean coast. It is a popular tourist destination.

Elle appartient à la Province de Castellón et plus précisément au district de Vinaroz, dans la comarque du Baix Maestrat (nom valencien, Bajo Maeztrazgo en castillan). La langue dominante officielle est le valencien.

Church of St Lawrence Bidford on Avon, Warwickshire - The precise date of the founding of the church is unknown, No priest is mentioned here in the 1086 Domesday Survey and if there was a church here then, it was probably a chapelry of Salford.. It appears as such in Henry I's time when Bernard, the first Prior of Kenilworth (1122–30), successfully claimed it for his house and the Canons of Kenilworth presented until the Dissolution . - The first named incumbent is of 1206 followed by a second 75 years later.

After the mid 16c Dissolution of Kenilworth Abbey, certain lands were granted in 1544 to Thomas Broke, merchant, of London. in 1602 Rice Griffin of Brome Court flic.kr/p/2ff6ysh sold the advowson and rectory to Sir John Sedley …...

Standing at the crossing of an ancient trade route, the area has long been inhabited, The remains of a Roman bridge have been found and also an Anglo-Saxon graveyard.

The present church dates largely from 1835 when the old nave was pulled down and a new, wider one built by architect Joseph Lattimore of Stratford. The nave pews were taken out in the 1960s

The c1250 tower and chancel both survive . The tower battlements probably dating from the 1835 rebuilding.

On the south chancel wall is a portrait in stone of Dorothy Skipwith who died 3rd February, 1655, she was the 1st wife of Fulwar Skipworth d1678 of Newbold Hall, who bought the manor in 1654 from Sir John Clarke , and in whose family it descended until 1840- Dorothy was the daughter of Thomas Parker of Bottesham by Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Hobson.

Also on the same wall is a memorial to Woodchurch Clarke d1647 - Sadly there is not picture of these to be had, and the church is usually locked.

There are 8 bells in the tower which are still rung regularly, six dating from 1791 with two added in 1954. The clock dates from 1683 and was rebuilt in 1887. An automatic winding mechanism being installed in 2005.

Ajanta Caves: Spink's chronology and cave history

Walter M. Spink has over recent decades developed a very precise and circumstantial chronology for the second period of work on the site, which unlike earlier scholars, he places entirely in the 5th century. This is based on evidence such as the inscriptions and artistic style, dating of nearby cave temple sites, comparative chronology of the dynasties, combined with the many uncompleted elements of the caves. He believes the earlier group of caves, which like other scholars he dates only approximately, to the period "between 100 BCE – 100 CE", were at some later point completely abandoned and remained so "for over three centuries". This changed during the Hindu emperor Harishena of the Vakataka Dynasty, who reigned from 460 to his death in 477, who sponsored numerous new caves during his reign. Harisena's rule extended the Central Indian Vakataka Empire to include a stretch of the east coast of India; the Gupta Empire ruled northern India at the same period, and the Pallava dynasty much of the south.

According to Spink, Harisena encouraged a group of associates, including his prime minister Varahadeva and Upendragupta, the sub-king in whose territory Ajanta was, to dig out new caves, which were individually commissioned, some containing inscriptions recording the donation. This activity began in many caves simultaneously about 462. This activity was mostly suspended in 468 because of threats from the neighbouring Asmaka kings. Thereafter work continued on only Caves 1, Harisena's own commission, and 17–20, commissioned by Upendragupta. In 472 the situation was such that work was suspended completely, in a period that Spink calls "the Hiatus", which lasted until about 475, by which time the Asmakas had replaced Upendragupta as the local rulers.

Work was then resumed, but again disrupted by Harisena's death in 477, soon after which major excavation ceased, except at cave 26, which the Asmakas were sponsoring themselves. The Asmakas launched a revolt against Harisena's son, which brought about the end of the Vakataka Dynasty. In the years 478–480 CE major excavation by important patrons was replaced by a rash of "intrusions" – statues added to existing caves, and small shrines dotted about where there was space between them. These were commissioned by less powerful individuals, some monks, who had not previously been able to make additions to the large excavations of the rulers and courtiers. They were added to the facades, the return sides of the entrances, and to walls inside the caves. According to Spink, "After 480, not a single image was ever made again at the site".

Spink does not use "circa" in his dates, but says that "one should allow a margin of error of one year or perhaps even two in all cases".

Role of Hindus in building Buddhist caves

The Ajanta Caves were built in a period when both the Buddha and the Hindu gods were simultaneously revered in Indian culture. According to Spink and other scholars, not only the Ajanta Caves but other nearby cave temples were sponsored and built by Hindus. This is evidenced by inscriptions wherein the role as well as the Hindu heritage of the donor is proudly proclaimed. According to Spink,

That one could worship both the Buddha and the Hindu gods may well account for Varahadeva's participation here, just as it can explain why the emperor Harisena himself could sponsor the remarkable Cave 1, even though most scholars agree that he was certainly a Hindu, like earlier Vakataka kings.
