The Jishu Shrine inside the iconic Kiyomizu-dera is dedicated to the Japanese equivalent of Cupid. The shrine is popular with young ladies looking for love, and with newlyweds hoping to guarantee a long and happy marriage.

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera (音羽山清水寺), is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple was founded in 778, and its present buildings were constructed in 1633. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure. It takes its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water. [Source: Wikipedia]

Looked closely at the flowering of a cabbage tree in the heat of NZ summer.

Sorry I will be mostly off for 2 weeks travelling from tomorrow.

Thanks very much for your comments! I will try to respond in kind.

Praying Mantis, guarding a local mailbox

A Praying Mantis passed by our patio table.

Little mantis in the yard this morning, in a large yucca (I think) thing that gets big flowering stalks the hummers and other birds love. Also gets some nice spiders, but I think it's a bit early yet. Mantis could be nicely positioned to pick one off maybe. This one is quite pale, and so is the plant it's on. It has the same or similar yellow spot toward the hind end (barely seen so I marked it on the image), same or similar to the one I saw a month or two ago, and had really never noticed before. Check it large - full frame here,

So who needs an expensive camera anyway?

This was taken with my iPhone yesterday at Kew Gardens - somewhat downheartening to see the quality of shot that you can get from a lens that's smaller than most of the buttons on my Canon 5D.

Anyway, this is a Maranta leuconeura tricolor native to the Brazilian rainforest.

"Maranta leuconeura (prayer plant) is a species of flowering plant in the family Marantaceae, native to the Brazilian Rainforest. It is a variable, rhizomatous perennial, growing to 30 cm (12 in) tall and broad, with crowded clumps of evergreen, strikingly-marked oval leaves, each up to 12 cm long. The leaves have a habit of lying flat during the day, and folding in an erect position at night, hence the common name 'prayer plant'. The specific epithet leuconeura means 'white-veined', referring to the leaves."

The South African Praying Mantis (Miomantis caffra) was first identified in Auckland during the late 1970s. Since then it has been steadily encroaching southwards, unfortunately displacing our native species en route. It now appears to have firmly established itself in the top of the South Island to the detriment of the New Zealand mantis.

Esta fascinante criatura se camufla perfectamente en su entorno gracias a su color y forma, esperando pacientemente a su presa. Su postura erguida y "manos" plegadas le han ganado el nombre común de "mantis religiosa."

This fascinating creature blends seamlessly with its surroundings due to its color and shape, patiently waiting for its prey. Its upright posture and folded "hands" have earned it the common name "praying mantis."

I went to take the trash out and look who was sitting on the trash container.

Even missing an antenna, he's quite handsome!😁 He was about 4 inches long. One of the larger ones I've seen.

Praying mantis.

A particular insect almost belonging to another Planet.

It has many meanings, but one above all is that many see this insect as a sign of deeper peace, quiet and the embodiment of meditation.

That is a good omen!

Praying mantis! The first one I have ever seen

These insects get their name because they have very long front legs that they hold in a position that reminds people of praying. There are about 1,800 species of praying mantises around the world.

Young praying mantises molt about ten times as they grow toward adulthood. After each molt, the mantis is a pure white color and looks like an albino. However, the white coloration only lasts a short period of time and soon the mantis darkens into a brown or green color

They can turn their heads 180 degrees—an entire half circle

A praying mantis egg case, or ootheca, contains anywhere from 50 to 400 eggs, which develop into tiny baby mantises, or nymphs. When the weather warms up in the spring, the hundreds of eggs inside will hatch, and the babies will emerge from the case.
