Don Henley - Praying For Rain

Driving through southern Utah I saw this rock formation and thought to myself it looked like someone praying for rain, had to stop.

The South African mantis (Miomantis caffra) was accidentally introduced to New Zealand from South Africa in the late 1970s.

Male mantis looking perhaps a little pensive at the thought of the impending perilous mating season.

This was the first decent day we've had in a while as far as the temps go so I headed to the park to find some bugs.

If this gut hadn't moved, I'd have walked right by him.

Found this one yesterday guarding the dahlia from those little grasshoppers. They can turn their heads 180 degrees, that’s half a circle. My favourite insect ❤️

This little guy hand around my garden and grew up fast....he liked garden vegetables.

Tidda and I came upon this praying mantis who was standing in the middle of the trail. You will notice that the right forearm is missing. Looks like a pretty devastating injury and possibly quite recent.

Apparently, mantises are the only insects who can turn their necks to look sideways - and that's exactly how this mantis was keeping track of my feeble attempts to snap a photo. The bright sun rendered my screen useless and I had to hold back a curious Tidda with one arm. Finally, she/he lost interest in being photographed and proceeded over to a bush that seemed good for climbing upon.

Tidda and I continued on the trail but almost immediately were confronted by ANOTHER mantis! A brown one, and walking towards us quite rapidly! Tidda actually jumped to the side as she was startled. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the brown mantis had a similar traumatic amputation of one foreleg!! Had I stumbled into the middle of some epic battle that continued across multiple scenes??? Was the brown one coming to finish the fight?

I couldn't stay to see what would happen but I have no doubt some high drama took place there that afternoon.

Praying Mantis - Mantis religiosa

This mantis has been hanging out on our driveway. I was crawling on my knees to get eye-level with it. Taken in Harding County, New Mexico, USA.

I think these little animals are so cool. This one escaped the "cutting room floor" as I was filling my green recycling bin with fallen leaves and cuttings. I spotted it just in time, making its way to the top edge of the bin, so I helped it back onto the lantana I was trimming. Sunlight going down, btw.

Another angle of a Praying Mantis which I previously uploaded - side on before, I like this front on view. Such incredible looking insects!
