Buddhist monks walk past prayer wheels at the "Monkey Temple" (Swayambhunath Stupa) in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In prayer one does not prayer in the limelight and the other in shadow. Prayer partners should support each other, one does not dwell in the shadow of the other. Each is equal in prayer and before the eyes of God.

text reads, "silence. with awe rejoice"

My understanding is that there is considerable scratching of heads when it comes to this mural. It looks like a man in prayer, who to me, looks like he is impaled by a straw that has something in it. Is the life being sucked out of him, and that's why he is praying? Or is Heaven giving essence and nourishment to a troubled soul?

This mural is smack dab in the heart of Civil Rights country.

Frankly, when I first saw this mural, I scratched my head: 'What on earth?' What I now realize might be important that I did not understand or photograph at the time was that this image's bottom half is colored black, while the top half of the person is transparent. With a black outline. I suspect that the transparent half that is part of the black half represents us all, no matter one's color. I can cut and paste a self-image in here. The straw extends all the way down into the posterior of the black half.

Mural title: ‘The Prayer’ (2011)

This chart is based on an attempt to show some ideas from the book Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?, by Phillip Yancey. (Zondervan, 2006) Yancey's book is not a quick read. It's very thorough, although the reading level is not a challenge. The answer to his title question is that yes, it does, although worthwhile prayer is hard, and often discouraging work.

The background is modified from a photo of ice crystals on a car's front windshield, taken from inside the car.

I have blogged about this book, and expanded on the graphic a little, here.

Thanks for looking!

By prayer we acknowledge God's power and goodness, our own neediness and dependence. Have a blessed weekend my friends. Regards!

I took this set of shots at a nightclub in Boston in 1980. The folks I photographed were game, but the security team kicked me out. They're not really punks, but New Wavers in Prayer doesn't pack the same alliterative punch. Do you recognize anyone?

For Jeanne. Thanks to my dear friend for a great conversation, and pushing me to release some angst I've had about sharing some of my work. I appreciate her perspective and wisdom!

This was taken at St. Michael’s Cemetery, which is located in the borough of Queens in New York City. Established in 1852, St. Michael’s is one of the oldest religious, nonprofit cemeteries in the New York City metropolitan area which is open to people of all faiths. I really love all the old statuary they have there. The statues all seem so peaceful and serene but also very sad. I think they seem to have a sort of quiet grace and dignity to them. There's something about this old statuary just seems to fascinate me!

My sister-in-law, Avona and her female Great Dane, Rosie, are inseparable. After a number of years with an incurable cough and discomfort, Avona was diagnosed with what they now know was a hereditary lung disease. Currently she is high up on the lung transplant list at Stanford Medical Center. Any prayers you can send her way would be greatly appreciated. Her spirits are strong and she and Rosie have plans for a full life together and perhaps a bigger car!

"Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD."
