Not just this, the UPA Govt. has also sought to build and reaffirm military, commercial and strategic ties with military junta of Burma and the racist colonialist Israeli. It is matter of shame and shock that the UPA regime is defending these alliances with militaristic and racist colonial regimes even in the face of their increasing brutality. No wonder SFI in the campus, while issuing its belated solidarity for Burmese people struggle for democracy, never condemned their ally UPAs military and commercial support for the military junta. .

The Response of JNU Students Movement and JNUSU to the Burning Questions of Our Time .

The ongoing peoples movements and their brutal repression by the state, as well as the assault of anti-people policies all call urgently for a powerful intervention by JNUSU. It was the AISA representatives in JNUSU, led by the JNUSU Vice President and General Secretary, who led the involvement of JNU students on all these issues and stood up against displacement, draconian laws and caste repression in the country. .

.

The SFI representatives in JNUSU were conspicuous by their silence, constrained by their cosy relationship with UPA and support of the misdeeds of their CPI(M) government in West Bengal. .

On Reservations and Rights of SC/STs and OBCs .

The last year saw a renewed offensive by YFE, who worked to stall 27% reservation and subjected the pro-reservation forces to social humiliation and virulent casteist attacks, marshalling both legal and social means against the forces of social justice. It was the AISA who rose up to the challenge and met this offensive head-on through a 34-day hunger strike, challenging YFE every inch of the way. .

The AISA leadership in JNUSU articulated a strong position in the April 10 AC meeting, in favour of implementation of 27% reservation and 54% seat increase without any staggering in JNU. In the meeting called by the SSS Dean, it was only the AISA councillor from SSS, Pallavi Deka who was present and asserted the above position. In protest against the Supreme Court stay on OBC quota, it was AISAs JNUSU office bearers who called for a Protest March on campus and at Parliament Street. Implementation of 27% reservation remains a key question and the machinations of YFE to derail it will be robustly defeated. .

AISA and its JNUSU leadership have stood in solidarity with AIIMS doctors against the victimization of dalits and violation of Constitutional SC/ST quotas in AIIMS. They alone issued a statement of protest against the brutal lynching of a dalit college student, Chandrasen by upper caste goons in Pratapgarh, U.P. .

On Struggles Against Corporate Land Grab and Police Firing .

.

The AISA office bearers of JNUSU organied a protest-demo against the Nandigram firing; this was boycotted by SFIs JNUSU leaders. The JNUSU General Secretary visited Singur in December 2006, following Tapasi Maliks rape and murder by CPI(M) leaders. .

.

.

In the case of the Khammam firing also, it was the AISA office bearers in JNUSU alone who called for a Protest Demo. Even when poor peasants under the banner of CPI(M) were killed, the JNUSU President and SFIs JNUSU representatives silence spoke louder than words! .

.

.

The SIS Convenors report by SFIs Convenor has half-truths and silences that betray its anti-people position on SEZs, land-grab and Singur-Nandigram. The report claims to oppose SEZs for non-application of labour laws and complete exemptions to corporates, but fails to mention the key feature of SEZs i.e land grab and forced eviction of peasantry! It also does not explain why the CPI(M) MPs voted for the SEZ Act, and CPI(M)s West Bengal Govt was one of the first to implement SEZs in the country. Similarly, by its silence the report hides the truth of Singur and the established guilt of CPI(M) leaders in Tapasi Maliks rape and murder. The SFI claims that the Nandigram firing is regrettable, but in the same breath blames naxalites and the opposition for provoking the firing! Not surprisingly, the Congress govt in AP too uses this argument to defend the Khammam firing! Are we surprised that the SFI leadership in JNUSU failed to express protest on Khammam? The claim of regretting Nandigram firing is also false, given the statement of CPI(M)s Central Committee member Benoy Konar who said, The CPI-M is not at all ashamed of the Nandigram incident and the question of giving compensation to families of those killed in police firing on 14 March or taking action against police officials doesnt arise. (The Statesman July 31, 07) Is such shameless callousness the CPI(M)s or SFIs version of regret?! .

On Democratic Rights Violations by the Indian State .

.

The JNUSU office bearers from AISA organised a protest meeting against the spate of disappearances in Kashmir at the hands of the security forces. SFIs JNUSU representatives were conspicuous by their absence and silence. .

.

.

When Delhi Police issued a booklet advising a food code for North East students and a dress code for North East girls, it was the JNUSU General Secretary alone who protested strongly against this racist and sexist text. .

.

.

In opposition to Salwa Judum and the arrest of noted social activist Binayak Sen, the AISA councillors from SSS single-handedly organized protest and solidarity meetings with human rights activists on campus. .

Solidarity with Democracy Movements .

JNUSU office bearers from AISA held a Burma Solidarity student-youth meeting in February to support the movement against dictatorship. After the recent brutal crackdown on the monks movement for democracy in Burma, only JNUSU General Secretary has issued a statement of protest JNUSU President has been conspicuously silent. Also SFIs token solidarity with Burmas resistance was shamefully not backed with a strong condemnation of the UPAs military support for the killer Burmese junta. .

Workers Rights on Campus .

JNUSU office bearers from AISA held a workshop to discuss implementation of workers rights and minimum wages in JNU SFI representatives in JNUSU all boycotted this workshop. .
