Miss shooting sports so much I go to practices instead of games. Winter sports at Des Moines high schools have been sidelined as the school district continues to have classes online due to COVID-19. But with Winter break now underway, high school teams are at least allowed to practice. So I stopped by East High School as they held their first practice of the year with a new head coach.

The elder chick has been practicing to fly for about 10 days now. Today, at 82 days old he did his longest run of nearly 200 meter and did not take off. He will fly very soon.
Loons are excellent divers and have heavy bones, unlike most birds that have “hollow” bones. This is the reason they need such a long ran to get airborne.
