Fishmongers and tourists throw fish over the counter at Pike Place Fish as they yell heave-ho type things. Customers pick out the fish from the display and the fish is thrown to another employee, who prepares, cleans and packs it.

Photo taken during practice of the Maryland football team on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park in College Park MD on August 20, 2009. Christopher Blunck/Inside Maryland Sports
Intent: As I was taking photos around campus with the limited amount of diverse items to photograph, I decided to take photos of trees. First, the tree itself as a whole, then moving to the roots to the trunks themselves. When I saw how the birch tree photo turned out in the negatives I knew that was the one I wanted to use. To me, it shows a tree in a new way. I wanted to create a tension in my photo and a strong BW contrast to emphasize it’s BW coloring. For me, this photo represents my back yard. I grew up in the woods and always peeled the bark off of birch trees. My cousin and I spent a lot of time in the woods and used to have fires constantly in homemade fire pits; we would use the birch tree bark to start them. The fact that the birch tree is peeling on the right hand side grabs my attention and gives me the urge to peel it off. The birch tree also symbolizes escape for me since I would often go into the woods to get away from everyday life and let my imagine run wild. I also took the photo in such a way that the stripes of the tree would draw the viewer’s eye into the middle and look through the hole. Maybe even wonder what could beyond the tree. It’s too bad that there was another birch tree in the background; the “looking beyond” would have been a lot strong without it.
Practice piece 5: front
Still sticking with the 'leaves aren't always green' theme, I decided to do some elongated leaves in a blue and tan variegated cotton thread (Superior?), then went around them with an aqua blue variegated thread (Rainbows), then I used a silver metallic thread (Wonderfil) for the stems and veins of the leaves ONLY, then followed that with tiny bubbles in the same silver thread. I quite liked how this turned out and call it my 'Blue Gum' piece!
