Kelli, a girl I used to work with, made this practice bouquet out of the bows and ribbon from my shower. She did such an awesome job and I can't wait to walk down the aisle with it at the rehearsal!

Sheida Soleimani (born in 1990) grew up hearing her parents' stories of living under authoritarian rule in Iran and eventually fleeing in the mid-1980s. She also watched her mother - a former nurse unable to practice in the US - rehabilitate wildlife in their home. Soleimani's practice as an artist, educator, and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator grew out of this relationship with her parents. This series of photographs tells her family's story.

Soleimani uses specific images and references to address environmental and political issues through surreal, elaborate tableaus. Her practice begins with preparing intricate sets in her studio in Providence, Rhode Island. She incorporates source images, props, and symbols into her backdrops to create living collages. She then photographs these scenes, often including models - both human and non-human. Faces are always hidden, providing anonymity and universality, shifting the focus to their gestures. In these images, the hidden faces belong to her parents.

The site-specificity of Soleimani's florae and faunae ground the banners as syntheses of place and space pre- and post-migration. While her work intersects with the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran, for Soleimani, her parents, and Iranians globally, Iran is always important-not simply a headline. Human rights issues and themes of protest are always layered into her work, with pictographs of tulips, mountains, and chukar partridges-symbols of the Iranian revolution.
