“Be someone’s SUNSHINE when their skies are grey” shows the heart of a person who believed in being blessed to be blessing to the underprivileged and the needy.

Nehru Group of Institutions under the dynamic of leadership of Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee and Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of NGI have successfully carried out this humble, deep and generous desire of their father Dr. P. K. Das for the ninth consecutive year with a special event on the 15th of December, 2017 marked to celebrate the birthday of the founder mentor.

Founder’s Day saw the Nehru Group of Institutions organizing this one-of-a-kind event of “Best Faculty Award” to recognize, honour and appreciate the hard work, dedication, focus and efforts of faculty from the neighbouring colleges in the state of Tamilnadu, Pondicherry and Kerala to take education to the next level. Going further, the institution after casting a critical eye over 1500 applicants who sent in their resumes and credentials for the prestigious award, under the mentorship of Dr. B. Ilango, Chief Jury, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, selected 19 candidates for the category of “Best Faculty Award” and one candidate for the category “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The unbiased selection was not only based on the academic achievements of the pedagogues but also their desire to reach the unreached and underprivileged students and individuals in rural areas, helping them realize their dreams and aspirations.

The event started off with the “Tamil Thai Vaalthu” sung by the students of Nehru College, followed by the welcome address by Dr. B. Anirudhan, Principal of the Nehru Arts & Science College, who applauded the professors for their contribution not only to the field of education but also to the well-being of the community.

Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee of Nehru Group of Institutions presided over the function. In his address to the all the dignitaries, participants and audience present at the event, he spoke about India emerging gradually and steadfastly as a country churning out job creators and entrepreneurs rather being jobseekers thus redefining the entire global education system. He put forth his vision and mission to make leaders of the aspiring students by empowering and imparting them with the best of subject, practical knowledge and developing their talents that would help them realize their dreams thus making them a force to reckon with in the new millennium. He concluded by saying,

” Life is short and the passion is big” and expressed his desire to regenerate and reengineer the structure of the education system soon rather than later. He thanked and congratulated the pedagogues for being the role models and mentors of the young minds of the country and also the people of Tamilnadu for their contribution, dedication and belief in bringing changes in the Indian education system.

Dr. Amrutha, Director of Nehru School of Architecture, introduced the distinguished Chief Guest, Dr. Paula Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, the Sanskrit College and University, University of Calcutta, honouring and applauding her endeavours and achievements in the field of Education.

In her speech to the attendees of the event, she began with expressing her regret in being fortunate to meet the founder mentor Dr. P. K. Das. On her being applauded for her honesty in the field of Education, she made known the fact that honesty is a virtue that should be a part of every individual that should be seen in their work throughout their life. She appreciated and applauded Adv. P. Krishnadas, Managing Trustee and Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of Nehru Group of Institutions for shouldering the responsibility and keeping the oil in the lamp burning of the dream that the founder mentor Dr. P. K. Das has envisioned for the young minds of the country. She expressed her gratitude to the faculty in striving hard to raise the level of education by their sincere, dedicated and determined approach to bring about a sea of change in the education system as a whole. She emphasised on the importance of research and for India to be self-sufficient rather than being dependent on global help. She gave the example of two famous universities of India, Nalanda and Dakshsheela, for the exemplary guidance and mentorship programs to the needs of learners of south Asia comparing NGI to such famous Universities. She also reiterated the fact that faculty in India should hone their skills and talents and raise their competency level, thus competing with the global standards and needs.

The release of the first draft of the Nehru Group of Institution Newsletter was followed by a brief address by Dr. B. Illango, Chief Jury, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, who emphasised the necessity of the young minds receiving indepth training in honing their communication skills along with a practical approach in learning the subject matter of their respective fields of education. He applauded Dr. K. Porsezian, Pondicherry University for his efforts in coming up with equations that would help overcome the effects and challenges left behind by the striking of the deadly catastrophe of Tsunami.

Last but not the least, the dynamic Dr. Krishnakumar, CEO & Secretary of Nehru Group of Institutions, opened the eyes of all those present to the beautiful fact of being a blessing to others thus raising up the standard of GIVING than living by lending a hand of help and hope to those whose hard work and abilities go unrecognized and unseen. He said the “Best Faculty Award” not only bestowed honor to the deserving faculty but also made them responsible in taking the level of education a step further. Furthermore, it encouraged and motivated his college pedagogues to strive harder and make a mark in the lives and hearts of the young minds and society as a whole. The desire to reach out to every deserving faculty throughout the country was next on the agenda of the innumerable events planned for the year 2018. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty awardees and their families, organizers, and each one present who made this event a memorable one.

The ceremony closed with the National Anthem with many of the faculty awardees expressing their joy, surprise and gratitude to Nehru Group of Institutions in recognizing and honouring their work.

my grandmother ... my hope ....

About the photograph :

My grandmother’s story is perhaps the story of thousands of Indian women even today.Born before independence , though from a small village she has a wider lens of seeing this world ... mother of 7 children's itself gives some kind of responsibility ... you speak about the power of india ... she is still just the power house of our home as that of mitochondria is for a cell ... I look around, among the middle and upper educated classes in India, and see my grandmother’s story repeating over and over again, even today!! though having lot of interest in studies she could manage them only till std. 7th ....but speaking about the 85 years of practical knowledge empowers her strength ... the only reason i want to share her photo in this context is to show that ... her presence gives power to one and all in our family ....so its the story of my grandmother like her there are manier of our elders who constitute the power of each house ... powering india ....

A new session of Pangaea geology field training moved to Lofoten, Norway, to scout for new traverses for the Pangaea analogue complement.

The team, consisting of planetary geologists and training experts, is preparing space farers for lunar exploration.

Lofoten shares many geological features with lunar highlands, such as the Apollo 16 landing site, making it a perfect site to train astronauts on lunar geology.

Pangaea instructors Matteo Massironi , Riccardo Pozzobon, and Fransceco Sauro, as well as petrology professor and local expert Kåre Kullerud are guiding ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer through interesting geological sites in the Nusfjord, an area containing primitive crust rock formations, including anorthosites, which are known to be typical lunar highland rocks.

The Pangaea course is designed to provide European astronauts with introductory and practical knowledge of Earth and planetary geology to prepare them to become effective partners of planetary scientists and engineers in designing the next exploration missions.

The course also aims to give astronauts a solid knowledge in the geology of the Solar System from leading European scientists.

Alchemical treatises. Manuscript: England, late Fourteenth Century. MS Hunter 110 (T.5.12): Illustrated page from Albertus Magnus' The Secret of Philosophers (folio 62r)

The craft of alchemy developed significantly in the Thirteenth Century and it is consequently the subject matter of a large number of surviving late medieval manuscripts. This literature incorporates a spectrum of works, ranging from those dealing with technical metallurgical matters to those couched in mystical language concerning the transmutation of base metals into gold. This manuscript is a compendium of texts. Included are works by the thirteenth century Dominican scholar Albertus Magnus, William de Furnivall’s On the Sublimation of Arsenic, a copy of the Mappae Clavicula, a dictionary of alchemical terms, and anonymous treatises on salt and divination. The opening displayed to the left is from Albertus Magnus’s Straight Path in the Art of Alchemy. It is illustrated with simple diagrams of furnaces, used to ‘sublime’ or distil various substances. The illustrations in alchemical works are often unsophisticated, but nonetheless essential in books that were intended to be used in intensely practical ways.

The first part of Chaucer’s Canon’s Yeoman’s Tale provides a fascinating account of the workings of an alchemist’s laboratory with its unending and elusive experimentation. Although Chaucer refers to the craft as a ‘slidynge science’, he takes great delight in listing the strange names of the chemicals and processes, and obviously had some practical knowledge of chemistry.

Alchemical treatises. Manuscript: England, late Fourteenth Century. MS Hunter 110 (T.5.12): Page with illustration of furnace (folio 27v)

It was another great low power qrp event on the radio.

The catch of the day was Steve, WG0AT on Mount Herman in Colorado with Peanut & Boo goat!

Goathiker was my first contact of the contest & I was absolutely thrilled!

The balance of the day was far from uneventful as severe weather impacted our day just an hour or so into the event causing us to leave the park to side step an approaching thunderstorm. This same storm was responsible for a tornado warning which was later issued back at home unbeknownst to us at the time. Funnels clouds were sighted both east & west of the city near Ridgetown & Tilbury.

We would return back to the park just over an hour later only to set up everything over again but it was worth it & I had a great helper with patience beyond imagination. Why she isn't a ham I will never know but she is getting closer by the day with plenty of practical knowledge, thanks Sue!

Tombstone of Walter John Wilkinson (July 9, 1859 - September 30, 1927) and family. Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Canada. Spring morning, 2022. Pentax K1 II.

Obituary from The Globe, September 30, 1927, page 1:

WALTER J. WILKINSON, NEWSPAPERMAN, DIES

Second Member of Fraternity to Pass Suddenly Within Week

NEWS EDITOR OF MAIL

Walter J. Wilkinson, Managing News Editor of the Toronto Mail and Empire, died suddenly at his residence, 34 Rosemount Avenue, shortly after 1 o'clock this (Friday) morning. He was 68 years of age.

Though Mr. Wilkinson had not been in his usual robust health for the past year, new of his death will be received as a great shock by his many intimate friends. On Monday he attended the general meeting of Canadian Press members in the King Edward Hotel, and on Wednesday he was at the Woodbine races, appearing jovial and in his wonted good spirits

It is a rather startling coincidence that another well-known newspaperman and close friend of Mr. Wilkinson died suddenly in Toronto this week, namely, John S. Crate, Managing News Editor of the The Ottawa Journal dailies. Mr. Crate had come from Ottawa to attend the same meeting of Canadian Press members that was attended by Mr. Wilkinson.

One of the strongest links connecting the working newspapermen of yesterday with those of today is severed by the passing of W.J. Wilkinson, who, for 40 years was a newspaperman, continuously engaged in the daily grind and applying a practical knowledge of his profession.

Born in the business, he was printer, reporter and editor in St. Thomas before transferring his energies to the wider field afforded in Toronto, where he became City Editor of The World in the early nineties. Subsequently, he became connected with The Mail and Empire.

Mr. Wilkinson's son, Nelson, is Managing Editor of The Buffalo Times.

Funeral arrangements had not been made at the time of going to press this morning.

The Ebbw Vale Literary and Scientific Institute originated in 1849 when a group of local workmen and farmers met in the vestry of Old Penuel Chapel with the aim of forming a society for 'mutual improvement'. The group organised a small library in which members could read newspapers and periodicals. Later the group decided that they would like to establish a 'Mechanic's Institute'.

Mechanic's Institutes were originally set up with the aim of instructing mechanics in the principles of their work and in other areas of practical knowledge. They were particulary well established in Scotland, the Midlands and Northern England. By 1860 about 20 were in existence in Wales.

The group who met at Old Penuel did not have enough funds on their own to build the Institute they wanted. However, the project was adopted by the Ebbw Vale Company and the manager of the steelworks, Mr Thomas Brown, agreed to build an Institute. It cost the company £3,000 to erect and equip the building. The work was begun in 1852 and the completed Ebbw Vale Literary and Scientific Institute as it was from then on known opened in 1853. It comprised of a large lecture hall, a library and reading room and three classrooms. Members paid a small subscription towards the upkeep of the Institute and the Company subsidised the funds. Throughout the next 30 years the Institute served as the public hall for town meetings and was the main social centre in the town being used as a venue for concerts, lectures and other entertainments. It was the first public building to be built in Ebbw Vale.

The first evening classes were held at the Institute in 1854. They consisted of Arithmetic, Welsh and English Grammar. The same subjects were offered in 1870 with the addition of Mechanical Drawing. The implication is that the classes were designed to provide basic instruction in the 3Rs to people who had had little or no previous education. Attempts to offer evening classes in science and art subjects after 1860 were largely unsuccessful although this situation changed after the 1870 Education Act which led to the extension of elementary education and therefore meant that potential students at the Institute arived with a basic education and were better prepared for new subjects. The classes offered in the last quarter of the 19th century included ones in coal mining, iron and steel technology, book-keeping and engineering. After 1899 some of these classes were supported by Frederick Mills, the first technically trained manager of the Company. As well as providing educational classes, the Institute also provided facilities for recreational activities. The building also housed the main Ebbw Vale Post Office up until 1900 and the local constabulary for a time. The Ebbw Vale Technical School was also based in the building from 1931-1963.

The historic black-line illustrations are from the Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno, a Peruvian illustrated codex of the early seventeenth century with text by Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala. Chronicle sent to the king of Spain.

On the right are a couple of the beautifully-mounted quipu at the Larco H Museum, Lima.

The Incas were engineers rather than artists, and explored every area of practical knowledge: nothing is more characteristic of them than the communications network with which they equipped their empire.

One of the greatest surprises that greeted the Spanish invaders when they arrived in Peru was to find themselves looking at roads the like of which were unknown in Spain at that time. Yet the Indian engineers must have overcome the most appalling difficulties in constructing the imperial highways. Thousands of stone-laid miles through mountainous country.

It's evident that the roads were primarily intended to serve a strategic function. They enabled the sovereign's armies to intervene at any moment, and with amazing speed for that period of history, if it was necessary to put down a rebellion or repel an invasion. News and messages could be transmitted between Cusco and Quito, and between the capital and the southern frontier by means of a courier system. The messengers or runners, the chasquis, were renewed at approximately three-mile intervals. Normally they carried information, either verbal or contained within a quipu (above) , (but on occasion they might transport such things as fish for the nobles' tables). It would take about ten days for a message to travel the fifteen hundred miles from Quito to Cusco.

The tambos, a sort of mini-caravanserai placed at regular intervals along the route, served as rest-houses for travellers. It's believed the roads and tambos were not used by anyone other than the official services and personnel -- quipucamayocs, chasqui message-runners, soldiers, senior dignatories and the Inca himself.

This was the infrastructure of imperial domination.

With this extensive network of stone highways, the wheel was not used.

As a collection of free-standing, high-style buildings designed by many of Montanas leading architects, the MSU Historic District is matched only by Montanas other institutions of higher learning. The district also includes a range of historically significant Victorian, Revivalist, and Modernist styles beginning with the Collegiate Gothic Montana Hall (1896-1898) and extending though the 1967 Roskie Hall, an eleven-story dormitory designed in the futurist Exaggerated Modern (or Googie) style.

Harvey Washington Wiley (October 30, 1844, Kent, Indiana - June 30, 1930, Washington, D.C.) was a noted chemist involved with the passage of the landmark Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Wiley was offered the position of Chief Chemist in the United States Department of Agriculture by George Loring, the Commissioner of Agriculture, in 1882. Wiley brought with him to Washington a practical knowledge of agriculture, a sympathetic approach to the problems of agricultural industry and an untapped talent for public relations. After assisting Congress in their earliest questions regarding the safety of the chemical preservatives then being employed in foods. These famous "poison squad" studies drew national attention to the need for a federal food and drug law. Wiley soon became a crusader and coalition builder in support of national food and drug regulation which earned him the title of "Father of the Pure Food and Drugs Act" when it became law in 1906. In 1912, Wiley resigned and took over the laboratories of Good Housekeeping magazine where he established the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval and worked tirelessly on behalf of the consuming public.

Undoubtedly the largest gathering of Lincolnshire chairs in living memory ; assembled for the Chair Study Day when a group of members from the Regional Furniture Society visited . There were chairs from Brian Gray and John Boden as well as Steve Vogt - all local collectors - which made a total of well over 150 chairs on display . This was augmented by a couple of dozen that were brought along by members on the day .

Contributions by local windsor chair maker Peter Tree and Spilsby wood craftsman Rob Ley were most informative and added so much practical knowledge to the day .

Notes: In 1841, with the assistance of the inventor John Johnson, Richard Beard opened England's first professional photography studio on the roof of the The Polytechnic Institution, Regent Street. The Polytechnic Institution was opened in August 1838 to provide the public with 'a practical knowledge of the various arts and branches of science connected with Manufactures, Mining Operations, and Rural Economy'. The idea was that of Charles Payne, former manager of the Adelaide Gallery in the Strand. William Mountford Nurse, a builder, provided the initial capital. Sir George Cayley, landowner and aeronautical scientist, became chairman of the provisional committee and later of the directors. His influence helped to raise the necessary share capital. A house at no 5 Cavendish Square was purchased, and a new gallery building (designed by James Thompson) added, with an entrance on Regent Street. The Institution received its charter of incorporation in 1839. The Gallery housed a large exhibition hall, lecture theatre, and laboratories. Public attractions included exhibitions, working machines and models, scientific lectures, rides in a diving bell - a major attraction - and, from 1839, demonstrations of photography. The Polytechnic became known for its spectacular magic lantern shows, pioneered by Henry Langdon Childe (d 1874), and a new theatre was added in 1848. John Henry Pepper (1821-1900) was appointed lecturer and analytical chemist in that year. He was its most famous showman, also expanding the teaching role of the Polytechnic, which began evening classes in 1856 under the auspices of the Society of Arts
