All Saints, Narborough, Norfolk
The great medieval treasure of Narborough is to be found high in the lights of the north chancel window. This is a sequence of five figures illustrating the Orders of Angels. They depict Thrones, a small angel in white; Powers, a blond angel vigorously birching a devil, his scroll reading Potestates presut demones ('powers put down demons'); Virtues, an angel in purple; Angels, an angel in gold; and Cherubim, an angel in white protecting eartly citizens.

American actress Mala Powers (1931-2007 ) played the lovely Roxanne opposite José Ferrer in Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) and starred in other Hollywood films of the 1950s. She was a leading authority on the acting techniques of Russian-American theatre practitioner Michael Chekhov.
Mary Ellen Powers was born in 1931 in San Francisco, US. Her father was an executive with United Press International. After losing his job, her father moved the family to Hollywood in the Summer of 1940. She attended the Max Reinhardt Junior Workshop and fell in love with acting the first time she set foot on a stage. At 11, she made her film debut in the Dead End Kids film Tough As They Come (William Nigh, 1942). Actress Helene Thimig, Max Reinhardt's wife, convinced her to continue studying rather than become a child actress. In 1947, she worked on radio dramas like Cisco Kid, This Is Your F.B.I., and Screen Guild on the Air. On the latter show, she met actress-director Ida Lupino, who auditioned and approved Powers for the lead role as a rape victim in Outrage (Ida Lupino, 1950), made by Lupino's Filmmakers production company. The film created a minor sensation since rape had never been treated frankly on the screen because of the industry’s self-censorship. The same year, the 19-years-old Powers appeared opposite José Ferrer in Cyrano de Bergerac (Michael Gordon, 1950), which won him an Oscar and her a Golden Globe nomination. RKO boss, billionaire Howard Hughes was impressed by Powers’s performances and placed her under contract at his studio. Powers' promising career was derailed by illness. While on a Christmas entertainment tour in Korea in 1951 she became ill and nearly died. She was treated with chloromycetin, but a severe allergic reaction resulted in the loss of much of her bone marrow. Powers barely survived, and her recovery took nearly nine months.
When Mala Powers resumed work, it was in RKO productions like Rose of Cimarron (Harry Keller, 1952), City Beneath the Sea (Budd Boetticher, 1953), and City That Never Sleeps (John H. Auer, 1953). Later she became the B queen with such Science Fiction films as The Unknown Terror (Charles Marquis Warren, 1957), and The Colossus of New York (Eugène Lourié, 1958). Mala Powers’s film career dwindled in the late 1950s, but she remained active in radio, stage and television. She appeared in more than one hundred episodes of such television series as Maverick, Bonanza, Mission: Impossible, Bewitched, The Wild Wild West, Cheyenne, Wanted: Dead or Alive and Rawhide. Powers trained directly under Russian-American actor, director, author, and theatre practitioner Michael Chekhov for many years during her time in Hollywood in both group and private sessions. Over this period of time, Powers and Chekhov grew very close, and after his death she was named executrix of the Chekhov estate. She became one of the founders of the National Michael Chekhov Association and was considered a leading authority on his acting techniques. She wrote the book Michael Chekhov on Theatre and the Art of Acting: The Five-Hour Master Class. As a visiting professor, she lectured at major universities across the country. Her later films include Daddy's Gone A-Hunting (Mark Robson, 1969), the Argentinean horror film Seis pasajes al infierno/Six Tickets to Hell (Fernando Siro, 1981), and the thriller Hitters (Eric Weston, 2002) with Robert Davi. In 2003 she made her final stage appearance, in Mr. Shaw Goes to Hollywood at the Laguna Playhouse in California. Two years later she made one more screen appearance in the short comedy The Connextion (Jonathan Phillips, 2005). The film was developed through the Michael Chekhov Technique, used by all of the actors and crew. Mala Powers died in 2007 at a Burbank, California, hospital. She was 75 The cause was complications of leukaemia, She was survived by Toren Vanton (1957), her son from her first marriage to Los Angeles real estate man Monte Vanton, which ended in divorce. Her second husband was the publisher M. Hughes Miller.

Ghost sign for the Powers Dry Goods Company, on the side of a building in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Powers Dry Goods Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota was a department store chain that its peak consisted of 7 locations. Powers was founded in Minneapolis as the S.E. Olson Co. in 1881, but was acquired and renamed by St. Paul dry-goods merchants Alanzo J. and Fred Powers. It was itself acquired in the 1920s by Associated Dry Goods. In 1985, it was acquired from Associated Dry Goods by The L.S. Donaldson Company (also of Minneapolis, a unit of Allied Stores Corp.), which gave Donaldson's some breathing room against dominant rival Dayton's. In 1987, after Campeau Corp.'s buy-out of Allied Stores Corp., Donaldson's was purchased by Carson Pirie Scott & Co. of Chicago, Illinois which made the ill-fated decision to rename the stores with its own name. Carson's in its turn was acquired by P.A. Bergner & Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and formerly of Peoria, Illinois) in 1989, which in turn filed for bankruptcy in 1991. In 1995 Carson's sold the rump of the former Twin Cities area locations (formerly Powers/Donaldsons) to Dayton's parent Dayton Hudson Corp., which re-opened most of them under its moderate Mervyn's chain, mostly in a move to prevent serious competition in its Twin Cities stronghold. In 2004 when Dayton's successor Marshall Field's was acquired by May Department Stores, it also agreed to buy the former Donaldson/Powers locations operated by Mervyn's, and promptly shuttered them, selling the real-estate piecemeal.

Some background:
The Swedish Air Force was created on July 1, 1926 when the aircraft units of the Army and Navy were merged. Because of the escalating international tension during the 1930s the Air Force was reorganized and expanded from four to seven squadrons. When World War II broke out in 1939 further expansion was initiated and this substantial expansion was not finished until the end of the war.
Although Sweden never entered the war, a large air force was considered necessary to ward off the threat of invasion and to resist pressure through military threats from the great powers. By 1945 the Swedish Air Force had over 800 combat-ready aircraft, including 15 fighter divisions.
At the onset of World War II, the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) was equipped with largely obsolete Gloster Gladiator (J 8) biplane fighters. To augment this, Sweden ordered 120 Seversky P-35 (J 9) and 144 P-66 Vanguard (J 10) aircraft from the United States. However, on 18 June 1940, United States declared an embargo against exporting weapons to any nation other than Great Britain. As the result, the Flygvapnet suddenly faced a shortage of modern fighters. Several other foreign alternatives were considered: the Finnish VL Myrsky and Soviet Polikarpov I-16 were unsatisfactory, and while the Mitsubishi A6M Zero was available, delivery from Japan was impractical. The only way out appeared to be a modern, indigenous fighter aircraft.
The origins of the Saab 19 date back before the onset of WWII. Just in time for the American embargo, Saab presented to the Ministry on Sep 4th 1939 a fighter that had been meant to replace the obsolete Gloster Gladiators. The aircraft carried the internal development code ‘L-12’ and had been designed in collaboration with US engineers in Sweden, who were to aid with license production of Northrop 8-A 1s and NA-16-4 Ms.
The L-12 looked very much like the contemporary, Japanese Mitsubishi A6M “Zero”. The aircraft was a very modern all-metal construction with fabric-covered control surfaces. The L-12 was to be powered by a 1.065 hp Bristol Taurus and maximum speed was calculated to be 605 km/h. Its relatively heavy armament consisted of four wing-mounted 13.2mm guns and two synchronized 8 mm MGs on top of the engine, firing through the propeller arc.
The design was quickly approved and the new aircraft was to be introduced to the Flygvapnet as the ‘J 19A’. Production aircraft would be outfitted with a more powerful Bristol Taurus II, giving 1.400 hp with 100-octane fuel and pushing the top speed to 630 km/h. But the war’s outbreak spoiled these plans literally over night: the L-12 had to be stopped, as the intended engine and any import or license production option vanished. This was a severe problem, since production of the first airframes had already started at Trollhättan, in the same underground factory where the B 3 bomber (license-built Ju-86K of German origin with radial engines) was built. About 30 pre-production airframes were finished or under construction, but lacked an appropriate engine!
With only half of a promising aircraft at hand and the dire need for fighters, the Swedish government decided to outfit these initial aircraft with non-license-built Wright R-2600-6 Twin Cyclone radial engines with an output of 1.600 hp (1.194 kW). The fuselage-mounted machine guns were deleted, due to the lack of internal space and in order to save weight, and the modified machines were designated J 19B. This was only a stop-gap solution, though. P&W Twin Wasp engines had also been considered as a potential power plant (resulting in the J 19C), but the US didn't want to sell any engines at that time to Sweden and this variant never materialized.
An initial batch of 24 J 19B aircraft was eventually completed and delivered to F3 at Lidköping in late 1940, while airframe construction was kept up at small pace, but only seven more J 19Bs were completed with R-2600 engines. Uncompleted airframes were left in stock for spares, and further production was halted in mid 1941, since the engine question could not be solved sufficiently.
The J 19B proved to be a controversial aircraft, not only because of its dubious engine. While it was basically a fast and agile aircraft, the heavy R-2600 engine was rather cumbersome and not suited for a fighter. Handling in the air as well as on the ground was demanding, due to the concentration of weight at the aircraft’s front – several J 19Bs tipped over while landing.
As a consequence, the J 19B simply could not live up to its potential and was no real match for modern and more agile fighters like the Bf 109 or the Spitfire – but the Swedish equipment shortages kept the machines in service throughout WWII, even though primarily in a ground attack role and fulfilling other secondary line duties.
Towards the end of WWII, the J 19’s intended role was eventually filled by the indigenous FFVS J 22 fighter – ironically, it could be outfitted with a license-built P&W Twin Wasp. By that time about forty J 19 airframes were more or less complete, just lacking a proper engine. Mounting the now available Twin Wasp to these had seriously been considered, but the aircraft’s performance would not suffice anymore. Consequently, a thorough modification program for the J 19 was started in late 1944, leading to the highly modified post-WWII J 19D with a liquid-cooled Packard engine.
No J 19 ever fired in anger during WWII or was involved in battle, since Sweden remained neutral and stayed out of any conflict with its neighbors at war. Another major problem for the Swedish Air Force during World War II was simply the lack of fuel: Sweden was surrounded by countries at war and could not rely on imported oil. Instead, domestic oil shales were heated to produce the needed petrol, which was rather allocated to the interceptor units, though.
After WWII, the remaining dozen J 19Bs were kept in service and soldiered on until 1948, when all remaining aircraft were scrapped. Additionally, Wright was also paid the overdue license fees for the originally unlicensed engines. The late-war J 19D served on for some time, though, together with the J 26 fighters, until 1950, when both were replaced by de Havilland Vampires and the Swedish Air Force underwent a rapid modernization into the jet age.

The kit and its assembly
The Saab J 19 never saw the hardware stage, but it was a real life project that was actually killed through the outbreak of WWII and the lack of engines. Anyway, it was/is called the “Swedish Zero” because it resembled the Japanese fighter VERY much – wing shape, fuselage, even the cockpit glazing! Since I had an unused Hobby Boss Zero (a late model) in store, I decided to build a personal J 19 whif, just in case it would have entered service…
Much of the Zero was taken OOB – Hobby Boss kits are of simple construction, but they have thick/massive material which makes conversions rather difficult, so I changed anything that was easy to handle. This includes:
● A new R-2600 engine, from a Matchbox B-25 Mitchell bomber
● New horizontal stabilizers from a Matchbox Brewster Buffalo
● A new propeller with spinner
● Main landing gear was inverted, so that the wheel discs face inwards
● Wheels from a Brewster Buffalo
● New retractable tail wheel, from a P-51 Mustang
● A Matchbox pilot was added to the cockpit, as well as some details
Painting and markings
I did not want to use a typical olive green/light blue Swedish livery on this one, even though it would have been the most suitable option. Furthermore, I would not fall for the popular splinter scheme (Viggen style), which would by far not have been appropriate for the intended early WWII era. What to do…?
I did some legwork and found the Swedish B 3 bombers (Ju 86K), which were actually produced in Trollhättan under license in the late 30ies These wore various camouflage schemes, including German RLM colors, even the pre-WWII Luftwaffe splinter scheme in RLM 61, 62, 63 and 65. That made me curious, since I expected the colors to have a sharp contrast and make the Swedish and squadron markings stand out – but I did not go for the splinter look, I rather based my livery on a late B 3 scheme.
Painting was done with free hand and brushes, using Model Master enamels from the Authentic range, namely 2075 Dunkelbraun, 2076 Grün, 2077 Hellgrau and 2078 Hellblau as basic tones. These semi-gloss enamels are – in contrast to the other WWII RLM tones from the brand – easy to use and create a very fine finish.
Some weathering was done through dry-painting with lighter shades on the panels and leading edges, and a thin black ink wash was applied in order to emphasize the fine recessed panel lines of the Hobby Boss kit. Later some smoke and soot stains were added with dry-brushed matt black.
Only a few decals were applied: the Swedish roundels come from a TL Modellbau aftermarket sheet, the code numbers on nose and tail from a Swedish Fiat CR.42 Falco. The yellow color on the propeller boss was generally associated with a 3rd squadron, and the ‘3’ on the fuselage was lent from an Airfix Saab Draken. Plain and simple.
In the end, a simple whif, and it still looks a lot like a Zero – but so did the J 19! I am not truly happy with the RLM tone cammo, it almost looks like a winter scheme? But after taking pics with a forest background, both scheme and colors seem very appropriate for that environment, blending shapes. And it looks far more interesting than a pure olive green aircraft, doesn’t it?
As a side note: if you ever consider building a Star Trek Klingon ‘Bird of Prey’, consider RLM 62 as you basic color of choice!

Mike Powers aka the Atomic Man is attacked by a Pygmy Gorilla and several Intruders during the Summer of 1976. Mike Powers was later found beaten and bruised from the attack. This is Kairow he lived a LOOOOONG time ago. his life tragic tale starts off with a werewolf taking his innocence at 5 before turning and tearing into him. His mother saved his life and tought her son about hunters. Kairow dedicated his childhood to learning everything he could about the supernatural and how to kill them. Hunters are born sickly but have incredible powers if their illness doesn't take them before they are 30 they come right into their powers and become very strong beings. They are most commonly known because of their odd eyes everyone of them are born with Heterochromia. Kairow was slightly different his eyes where different colours but different shades he had 1 dark blue eye and 1 light blue eye. His heart was weak and he was constantly on the verge of a heart attack but what made him even more unique was the fact his heart was on his right side not left. Usually being this sick would result in him being branded DMW (Dead Man Walking) but because his mother was great friends with the town doctor they kept his condition a secret for so many years. They where quite adept in keeping secrets due to their biggest one was that Kairow was actually a bastard child of the two of them. Kairow did not know this so the only father he knew was the abusive son of a bitch his mother was married too. As Kairow grew up he couldn't get over the sexual abuse he received by the hand of the werewolf woman who he used to look up to, he would obsess over it and always look for signs she was around. by the age of 15 he started to give up on finding her and started to settle down. He couldn't bring himself to love a woman even though he tried his hardest, in his time being homosexual would result in being killed for worshiping the devil. Kairow fell inlove with a humble farmers son named Rowen and their relationship went on in secret for years. when Kairow was 17 he was pushed to date a young girl names Mary-Anne even though he was against it the relationship became physical and Mary-Anne became pregnant. 2 months before Mary-Anne was to give birth Kairow found out that Mary-Anne's child was not to him but to who he thought was his father. Kairow confronted his father and told him that he was gonna tell his mother and shame him and Mary-Anne. Kairow's father became enraged and grabbed the closet knife he pounced on Kairow and started stabbing he stabbed Kairow in the chest 10 times and cut a huge slash from his ear to his chin. To his fathers amazement Kairow didn't die even though his father was aiming for Kairow's heart he did not know Kairow's heart was not in the normal place. His mother ran through the door blasted her husband out of the way and rushed Kairow to the town doctor to his biological father. After months of barely holding on Kairow was deemed a lost cause and branded DMW. He had 1 month to live and if he didn't die through natural causes before the month he would be burned at the stake for being a devil worshiper. When Kairow left the hospital he went to go see his lover Rowen but found out he had been burnt at the stake and so would have Kairow if he hadn't been branded preserving his life for 1 more month. His father who had put him pushed him onto deaths door had found out about Kairow and Rowen's secret love and had told the town. Kairow got so angry he couldn't be around any of his family he left his mother and twin sisters with his abusive father and left. a week before he was to be burnt he decided to go into the local pub and drink his sorrows away, he met a very handsome very educated young man, Kairow struck up a conversation he told this young man everything how he wish he had a way to make his father pay, he told the man everything he would do to his father how he would torture and kill him slowly. The young man looked very intensely at Kairow and asked him if he had the chance to do what he was saying would he. Kairow laughed and nodded. The two left shortly after the man took Kairow by the hand and led him to a dark ally Kairow didn't have a chance to say anything before the man bent over and bit Kairow on one of his wounds Kairow grew weaker and weaker till he fell and from that point on he couldn't remember a thing. 2 weeks later Kairow woke in a dark box he panicked and started clawing at the roof of what seemed to be a coffin. When Kairow finally climbed his way from the coffin he lay on the dirt pile he had created while digging himself out he felt cold and stiff all his joints ached and his eyes didn't want to adjust. He hears a familiar voice say "don't worry it wears off soon" Kairow stared at the young man who had bitten him. They didn't say anything for the longest of times Kairow starts to stand but as he does so his jumps at the site of his arm it was no longer a nice tanned colour it was now stark white. The man bent over and patted Kairow on the head and whispered in his ear "You know what you have to do" Kairow smiled and started to walk into the direction of his parents house. He snuck in through the back door and went to his parents room his plan was to take his father and torture him then burn him slowly but when he saw Mary-Anne in his mothers spot of the bed and his mother nowhere in site Kairow saw black and went to the lounge room grabbed the lit lantern and and broke it he then walked out of his old house and barricaded the doors and windows and watched as the house started to burn. He smiled when the screams started and the smell of burning flesh filled the air. A Moment of panic ran through his body when he realised he didn't know if his mother and his sisters where still in the house or not but it was quickly replaced with satisfaction as he saw his fathers burning arm reaching through one of the gaps in the wooden reinforcements keeping him from escaping. Kairow turned too see the man who had given him this power and smiled the man looked down at him and said "My name is Mickren you are no my servant I am your sire and you will listen to me. I have great plans for such a broken individual such as yourself." Kairow was now a Vampire and he had never felt more empowered and ALIVE in his measly 18 years of life. As they started to walk away from the people starting to gather Kairow caught a glimpse at his reflection he noticed he had a HUGE scar stretching from his ear to his mouth but the one big thing he noticed was the fact he had 1 dark red eye and 1 light red eye this made him realize he still had some of his magic from when he was alive from when he was a hunter he closed his eyes and brushed his fingers over his scar and whispered a small incantation making the scar meld into his skin and show no more.
100's of years pass and Kairow is quite unstable he can loose his mind at the blink of an eye he can be ruthless and known to use both his physical and magic strength to over kill an individual. He can be very vein so he does tend to rely mainly on his physical strength so he doesn't take any magic away from the glamour he has on around some of his scars. As the years have gone by he has settled down and started to more of his sanity and become more stable. He is most calm when he is around his long time partner Tarlar. As the time has gone by his hatred towards Woman has diminished and he is happy to love either woman or man. He still dispises Werewolves but he has learnt to live with at least 1, his best friend Jackle's (Mickren's son) Girlfriend Midori. Kairow has a small close nit friend circle and he also helps control and lead Jackles section of the Kirin Clan.
May 8, 2014. This covered bridge spans the Petitcodiac River at Powers Pit Road, just off the Salisbury Road near Scott Road. Another artifact of my lunch-hour drives. Morning: long meeting. Afternoon: wrote a script to pull data for research into MOOC-REL and completed my annual performance review document. Another busy day.
Seen these in Powers Court. After I took the photo in a shop an alarm went off. I was approached by a lady and told politely that photography wasn't allowed. Awh well...at least I got the only capture I really wanted. Lol

I feel the uneasiness drain as the artificial rain splashes on my skin and reminds me how thin I am. Hours spent sitting in the softness of the shower, soaked to the bone by the lower powers of the lonely day.

I spend too much time losing the love of giving. The art of living, that was a blog I kept in the early days, a listless log of curated complaints. I spoke like a saint, I couldn't understand that loving a stranger is like looking for land. Like lighthouses locked in a silent stare, you give in to the glare, you speak until silenced. You don't ask questions, you talk with abruptness and wait to be interrupted. But none of that loosens the knot in my stomach.

I feel the pounding in my ears, blood from years of quiet drowned in seconds of sound. The adrenaline rush of sitting perfectly still, willing my waking life to be dreaming that I'm screaming, but at the top of my lungs I'm deceiving myself. What a wealth of information, you told me every way I'm wrong. What a good song, let's hear that chorus again in case we've forgotten. Let's get rotten, from the inside of our minds, let's draw straight lines to our lips, and ask only answers. I promise to never wonder how you're doing, if you promise that your words have no worry that they're proving. Silence is sharp, but it's soothing.

Being battered matters, especially when you do it to yourself. If you fall for sadness, it will be your friend, it will light your shadow to the darkened end.
