I visited the Butterfly Place yesterday, an indoor sanctuary in Westford, MA.

Colour popped Postbox as the Postman calls to empty it.

This butterfly comes from South America and is quite varied in its colouration, depending on the location. It is up to about 5.5-8 cm (2.2-3.1 in) in wingspan with a jerky unelegance in flight. It is one of the few butterflies that collects and digests pollen, conferring considerable longevity to the adults (several months). Adults roost in groups, returning to the same location each night. Also known as the Red Postman, the Red Passion Flower Butterfly, and the Crimson-patched Longwing.

The Postman Butterfly can be found in open areas, also near waterways such as rivers and streams. Its diet consists mostly of nectar and pollen that it collects and digests, while their much pickier caterpillars feed only on the leaves of passionflowers. Adults roost in groups, returning to the same location each night hence the name Postman Butterfly.

Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to leave a comment. Truly appreciated!

Postman’s Cottage

This cottage, formerly known as Lorna Doone, is located at Selworthy Green, Somerset on the edge of the Exmoor National Park. On the left and joined to it is Clematis Cottage and both probably date from the 16 or 17th century. They were re modelled in the mid-19th century by Sir Thomas Acland, a politician and landowner who created the cottages on Selworthy Green for his estate pensioners.

The cottages are now part of the Holnicote Estate which is owned and managed by National Trust.

Heliconius erato is a butterfly commonly known under a variety of names, such as the "Red Postman", the "Small Postman", the "Red Passion Flower Butterfly", or the "Crimson-Patched Longwing".

H. erato is one of the few butterflies that collects and digests pollen, conferring considerable longevity to the adults (several months). Adults roost in groups, returning to the same location each night.

Frem Wikipedis: Heliconius melpomene, the postman butterfly, common postman or simply postman, is a brightly colored butterfly found throughout Central and South America. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. Its coloration coevolved with a sister species H. erato as a warning to predators of its inedibility; this is an example of Müllerian mimicry. H. melpomene was one of the first butterfly species observed to forage for pollen, a behavior that is common in other groups but rare in butterflies. Because of the recent rapid evolutionary radiation of the genus Heliconius and overlapping of its habitat with other related species, H. melpomene has been the subject of extensive study on speciation and hybridization. These hybrids tend to have low fitness as they look different from the original species and no longer exhibit Müllerian mimicry.

Heliconius melpomene possesses ultraviolet vision which enhances its ability to distinguish subtle differences between markings on the wings of other butterflies.[3] This allows the butterfly to avoid mating with other species that share the same geographic range.
