Dark rain bearing clouds gather as the diesel shunter drags Defiant and Rood Ashton Hall out of the shed ready for repositioning for a 30742 Charters photo shoot.

Squirrell sitting on a fence pole in lovely back light...

Something about how these two leaves were positioned really grabbed me.

Minutes after arrival with the 1822 from Dingwall, the locomotive has already uncoupled from it's short take of Mark 1 and 2 coaches and is about to run around prior to pushing the coaches back into the station ready for the next departure.

Those viewers that know Kyle may be wondering about my viewpoint for taking this photograph. In the summer of 1989 I was working on a ship that returned to Kyle each evening and moored at the quay next to the station, and this is taken from the bridge of the MV Northern Horizon... no pole necessary!

At this time services from Kyle were unable to reach Inverness due to the collapse of the Ness Viaduct a few months earlier ( see flic.kr/p/2aErgVU). Consequently, trains were running only as far as Dingwall with passengers being taken by bus to Inverness.

It is about 250 years old.

The tree is also one of the thickest in Slovenia, as it has a trunk of 785 centimeters and reaches a height of 40 meters.

It is a cross between Platanus orientalis and Platanus occidentalis. It suits rich, humus, medium wet, well-drained soil and sunny positions.

This string of jetty jacks, positioned along the brush-covered east bank of the Mojave riverbed beside the Rocksprings trestle, helps to control erosion of the embankment where the rails leave the trestle and head across land; a matching set of jacks occupies the same position on the western shore. Each individual jack consists of three lengths of steel angle joined at their midpoints, producing a structure like a six-pronged jack from the child's game; the lengths of angle are held in place by wire, laced like a spider's web about the jack's center. The jacks are then attached along a cable anchored at each end, the whole length—in this case, half a dozen or so jacks—protecting the shoreline by catching sediment and debris, as the river, flush with water when the winter rains are heavy, courses beneath the trestle.

Camera: Univex Iris (1938, with Vitar 50mm f/7.9 lens). The Iris is an Art-Deco styled, cast-metal camera with adjustable aperture, fixed shutter speed, and fixed focus. Its native film is Universal No. 00, a proprietary film manufactured for the camera's maker, Universal Camera Corp., by Gevaert in Belgium. 00 film featured six 28 x 38 images per roll, and at 32mm wide was just slightly narrower than 35mm film. Universal filed for bankruptcy in 1952 and closed its doors in 1964, so there has been no new 00 film for the Iris and other early Universal cameras for several decades.

Film: I have read of people cutting down 120 film to make 00 film, but because 32mm is an odd width, one would have to develop it in open trays and make a special film holder for scanning. I decided instead to use the next smaller film size, 16mm or 110 film. I made 00 backing paper by cutting down 120 film backing paper. 00 film's image length is nearly the same as that of 828 film (00's image is 38mm long, 828's is 40mm), so I used my 828 backing paper template (www.pheugo.com/cameras/index.php?page=spool828), cutting it slightly narrower for the 00 spool (32mm rather than 828's 35mm), and reducing the length from 828 film's eight image length to 00's six. When cutting down 120 film for 127 film cameras, there is a strip of film about 15mm wide left over; I used one of these strips to roll up in the backing paper. I used my accustomed 100 ISO Arista.edu Ultra film, developed in Arista Liquid Developer for 8:15 minutes @ 65 degrees, and scanned with an Epson V600 scanner. This was my first time developing and scanning 110 film—thanks to my Flickr friend Nyms for her insight on the Yankee Clipper developing tank!

See where this picture was taken. [?]

Times so bad that even angels would wish to crouch and hide, others would prefer death to endless suffering, others again might wish to have never been born in the first place. So many men with guns pulling the religious traditions through the dirt. So much hypocrisy in the 'defence' of democracy; such a corrupted language defining the 'other'; so much violence masquerading as justified reactions. So little preparedness to step into the other's shoes. I could go on. However, when angels are helpless, and when violence is going to create even more violence, the foetal position is the wrong choice. We got to stand up and walk. The Flehmen response (also called the Flehmen position, Flehmen reaction, flehming, or flehmening) is a behaviour whereby an animal curls back its upper lips exposing its front teeth, inhales with the nostrils usually closed and then often holds this position for several seconds.

It may be performed over a site or a substance of particular interest to the animal (e.g. urine or faeces) or may be performed with the neck stretched and the head held high in the air.

Flehmen is performed by a wide range of mammals including ungulates and felids.

The behaviour facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ located above the roof of the mouth via a duct which exits just behind the front teeth of the animal.

A client of mine is looking to add choreographed routines to their bi-monthly events. Info below

Thank you for your interest in the Cabaret Choreography Position!

L&H has 2 main venues, Love&Harmony Jazz Club with over 4000 active group members, and our new Orchide's Private Club.

Each venue hosts various events throughout the month, themed tribute concerts and much more along with an active ballroom.

CHOREOGRAPHY POSITION:

We are looking for a talented individual that can piece together "Cabaret" style routes 2 times a month (some routes can be used over and over on different dates with outfit changes I'm sure).

Support from venue will be provided for various items as needed (props, costumes, etc).

This isn't an "our venue" only position. If you perform and do choreography at another venue, that is great! We support everyone and just looking for something that can devote some time to putting on semi-regular routes at our venue.

Contact Orchide2 or Samual Wetherby if you have any questions.

Caddo Lake, Uncertain, Texas, USA

On the first morning of Sapna’s workshop we set off on a boat before sunrise. The start time had to be changed at short notice when it was realised the clocks in Texas went back an hour the night before - a week later than here in the UK.

With Capt. Rich at the helm the 7 of us (6 Participants and Sapna) set off to see what was out on the bayou. For a few seconds on the way out we thought there might be some mist but our hopes were soon dashed. With not a cloud in the sky we knew we would get nothing interesting from it so after a bit of searching we settled on trying to get a sunrise between a group of trees. “Can you stop here please Rich.?”, Can you back up a bit please Rich?”, “Can you move us a bit to the left please?”, Can you turn the engine off please Rich and let us drift a bit”......and so it went on! Capt. Rich must have been used to this as I gather he’s done workshop trips for Sapna before but I did admire his forbearance. Perhaps it wasn’t just coffee in that flask he was drinking from.

Now as you may appreciate even with the engines off a boat is rarely completely stationary. It tends to drift, even if very slowly, so all 7 of us trying to line ourselves up in exactly the right place for where we thought the sun would rise isn’t easy and, of course, moving positions when the boat is drifting just makes things worse. When you are trying to get a shot like this, doing so from a drifting/bobbing boat is not ideal to say the least. So this is basically my excuse for not getting the sun dead centre of the image which I admit was my aim. I shot several images attempting to get a sunstar but only two shots showed any sign of a sunstar and this was the best of the two. I particularly like the backlit Spanish Moss. I admit I’ve tried to clean the image up by removing a phone mast in the background and some branches from adjacent trees that encroached into the image. I know the purists amongst you may not agree with that but I’m OK with doing that and it’s my image plus I’ve declared it.

Once we had all filled our memory cards with our sunrise shots off we went with Capt. Rich in search of our next shooting spot.

If anyone is interested Sapna has fixed the dates for her 2026 workshop here www.sapnareddy.com/products/copy-of-beauty-of-the-bayou It’s a different location for the accommodation next year but I happened to stay there for 3 nights after the workshop finished and it’s probably the best B&B I’ve ever stayed in. I’m not on a commission

Oh, and I expect most of you over the age of 60 got this but the title relates to the 1966 Beatles song of the same name - just thought it was appropriate www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTapImFT9Sc&list=RDLTapImFT9S... Apologies to anyone who now suffers from the ear worm

This is an image of an around 50% illuminated phase of our closest planetary neighbour Venus.

I managed to get my planetary scope out back in June to image this beautiful object, shining brilliantly in our evening skies then. This represents the last time I have done any planetary imaging due to circumstances.

The data has been on my drive since and I'm only getting around to have a look at it now.

Venus is one of the so-called inferior planets, as it orbits the sun inside our orbit.

This means that Venus orbits the sun faster than earth and from our perspective is sometimes closer to us and at other times is on the far side of the sun. This change in relative position means we see phases for Venus (and Mercury).

Unfortunately when it approaches earth and is at its largest apparent size its phase also decreases!

This is a false coloured UV/IR filter image to reveal some cloud structure in the thick atmosphere of Venus. Data from the IR filter is mapped to the red channel and that from the UV is mapped to blue. A synthetic green channel is produced from a blend of both. Some lovely cloud structure is apparent.

Imaged with a Celestron C11 SCT and a ZWO 290MM camera. Using Baader IR pass and Venus U filters.
