Unit 1.1 - Position/Angle

A handy diagram for understanding the different light produced on the subject using a light source from different angles.

All camera & flash settings were fixed (listed in image). The only difference was the angle of the flash to the subject (flash was always equidistant to the subject).

Inspired by Game of Thrones cover art. Soft box 45 degrees to the left of subject. Second flash pointed at wall behind subject.

Three First Bristol buses sit at traffic lights on the junction between Rupert Street & Colston Avenue awaiting the green light. Nearest the camera are a pair of the ex Centrewest Dennis Lance SLF's on rail link 180 towards Clifton, whilst furthest away S720 AFB on an 88 working, with an amused looking Mr Williams pulling faces out the cab window.

At the upper right, can be viewed the long Washington Pavilion and just above it, the white-cone shaped U.S. Pavilion. In the foreground is a very modern medical and hospital complex.

I think these control the forward and aft hydroplanes, respectively. The submarine is the post-war U9, ex-Federal German Navy, now on exhibit in Technik-Museum Speyer, Germany

Here's a middle-period Hurricane, 1939 more or less, "B" scheme camouflage, Port profile, with

- the de Havilland licensed Hamilton-standard 2-position propeller,

- Rolls-Royce ejector-style engine exhaust manifolds,

- the later version Pitot tube,

- vacuum pump for instruments (note bulge just behind spinner) and no venturi,

- anti-spin strake and extended rudder under the fuselage.

- Underside of port wing and related fuselage painted black all the way to the center line

(Not shown, the starboard wing and related are white underneath.)

Remaining early hallmarks are

- the original, tubular, antenna mast,

- bullet-proof glass on the outside of the windscreen,

- no rear-view mirror,

- Aluminum finish (dope, lacquer, enamel, as appropriate) under the fuselage and horizontal stabilizer,

- No yellow tips on propeller

Nothing on reverse.

German soldiers man a defensive position, probably on the Eastern Front. A fabulous view of their pristine trench and some interesting equipment items.

The man on the left appears ready for a spot of sentry duty - or he's just returned from a spell. Tucked in his belt is a Model 1894 'Hebel' flare pistol - the most commonly encountered model.

The rifleman standing on the firestep is armed with a Gew 98 fitted with a 20 round magazine. This innovation was unsuccessful for a multitude of reasons, including the significant amount of force required to close the bolt over a fully loaded magazine.
