Midnight Moment: Jason Akira Somma, Times_Square_Analog_Portrait
June 1, 2019 – June 30, 2019
every night from 11:57pm-midnight
Jason Akira Somma is a filmmaker and choreographer who investigates how we experience, process, and participate in the cultural systems that surround us. Times_Square_Analog_Portrait is a conceptual portrait of one of the most distinctive aspects of the neighborhood: the spectacular electronic billboards that display advertisements — and the Midnight Moment program itself. The work is part of Somma’s series of institutional portraits designed to reflect the environment of the presenting institution or platform. Somma created Times_Square_Analog_Portrait from footage of the electronic billboards, video feedback enlivened with hand-operated camera movements, and signal manipulation using electromagnetic and light frequency information he recorded in Times Square on custom analog devices.
For this photo, I used portrait design to create a sense of emphasis and movement through out the photo to meet the project goals. With the ball moving upwards, your eyes follow from the body to the ball in the air. I also created a sense of emphasis by making almost everything darker and the basketball more orange.
When I was planning to take this photo, I told my brother to walk in front of me and throw the ball up into the air. I stood there and took multiple pictures to get a bunch of different pictures where the ball was in the air. I wanted to emphasize the basketball because my brother has loved basketball since he was 2, and he had to give it up because of school and still to this day loved to just go outside and play around.
Overall, I think I did well on the concept of this portrait and how it portrays my brothers life.
If i could go back and re-do, I would take the picture at a different angle and use different lighting so the ball is more focused and not so much its surroundings.

It has been a while sinds I worked with pastel-crayons. Maybe it is good idea to draw with this material again. I allways try to improve myself. It is a surprising material,so simple and strong.

For this photo, I used the technique of portrait design to create emphasis on the baseball and meet the project goals. With the background blurry and the foreground in focus, there is definitely emphasis occuring.
When I was planning this photo, I intentionally decided to blur out the subject because I thought it would make it more interesting or compelling. To add onto that, I wanted to emphasize the baseball because my grandpa grew up playing it and it’s still is his favorite sport. Also, I didn’t want to do the typical portrait.
Overall, I think I did well on editing the photo on photoshop.
However, I wish I could have captured a different background in the photo that would be less distracting.
