I love soups! One of my favourites is Korean Pork Bone Soup. Owl of Minerva, close to home makes a great one that's rich in flavour, with a generous amount of meat and great tasting sides, including kimchi, bean sprouts, and more. Satisfyingly delicious!

I recently introduced my cousins to Korean cuisine at The Owl of Minerva in Pickering, and they LOVED it!
Of course, we had to have their famous Pork Bone Soup (Kamjatang Jeongol) so we got the large one, served on a burner at the table.
This was a great introduction for my cousins. They loved everything, even the included side dishes (kimchi, bean sprouts, pickled radish, etc.) but their favourites, as expected, were the Kalbi and Fried Chicken. They're already planning to return for more! So am I...

I was out in Oshawa recently and met up with a friend for lunch. I had spotted Mom's Kitchen nearby so we decided to give it a try.
The pork bone soup was pretty good, with lots of meaty pieces and a rich broth. The tofu was flavourful but a bit spicy for my friend. The chicken was very tasty, especially with the honey garlic dipping sauce included.
Overall, we enjoyed the food and found it all very reasonably priced, with good portions. Our server was very polite and friendly. This was a good meal!

I had no idea what this set was going to be when I bought it. The only picture of the set only shows black shapes for the pieces, no detail. But I like to live on the edge, so I bought it. :-) It's obviously a wok with stuff in it, I recognize corn, but nothing else. I like the wok & the slotted scoop, but I am totally baffled by the clearish stuff in the plate. It's all attached except for the one piece I put by itself. Anybody know what it is?
I was thrilled to be invited to a "private event" at Satsuki for an authentic Kyushu Ramen 九州拉面. I nearly passed on the offer, but at the last minute, I called and confirmed our dinner reservation at our favourite local Japanese cafe. The lady is actually from Kyushu, so you can't get Kyushu Ramen more authentic than that :)
Her version of ramen doesn't include a boiled egg, not that it was necessary with the super tasty soup! The boss lady asked us if we enjoyed it. Of course we did! Then she went on to say that she was satisfied with her soup today :)
While we were chatting, the boss lady suggested we go to the onsen town of 别府 in Kyushu for onsen, ramen, water park for the kids and a wild monkey park.

Thank you maangchi! You're definitely the cutest chef on youtube! I finally tried this recipe out, and even minus all those things I didn't have, it tasted wonderful!

Julia and I watched the chef splash in some milk to make the milky-white broth for the Tonkotsu Ramen, just like Kenny said. I don't really mind that shortcut, as long as the broth still has the fragrance of pork and fried garlic. Both of these seemed absent in today's broth, and the prices have gone up by AUD1 since 2009.
Prices have gone up at Momotaro Rahmen, and the quality slight down.

It looks super tasty!

Jane says, " I made this gamja tang last night for the FIRST TIME - it came out so delicious! Better than restaurant style (no MSG!) and I loved your tip about boiling the pork for 7 minutes and removing the fat water.
My friend enjoyed this with me and said this was not "nukkihae" (greasy/oily) but still very tasty and juicy!"
Gamjatang or pork bone soup is a very nutritious, spicy Korean soup made with pork spine or ribs, vegetables, green onion, hot peppers and ground wild sesame seeds. Mine was true to its name and included gamja ( boiled potatoes). The soup base is a deep red colour from the red hot peppers.
Served with a bowl of steamed rice and a set of 5 cheop banchan (side dishes/appetizers). From left: miyeok muchim (seaweed with sweet vinegar and salt), kimchi (fermented napa cabbage seasoned with chili peppers and salt), buchu kimchi (spicy green onions kimchi), dubu jorim (tofu pan fried and braised in a soy sauce based sauce), kongnamul (cold boiled bean sprouts with sesame oil).

Soft Shell Crab Tonkotsu Shio Ramen AUD14.50 - Kokoro Ramen, Melbourne.
From the irrashaimase of the Japanese-speaking waitstaff to the arigato gozaimasu, it seemed like a good start, but the first taste of the tonkotsu broth was underwhelming. The broth was rich and tasty, but without any MSG, it seemed lacking in porkiness. At least the yummy gooey egg and chewy smooth ramen were good, so was the light and crisp soft-shell crab.

The tonkotsu pork bone soup is still rich and milky, and always over-seasoned.
Tonight's serve of pork was a bit frugal though, and where's my kamaboko swirl? And the egg is still fully hardboiled.

I love Korean Pork Bone Soup! I've said that before and I mean it! It's just so comforting. I prefer to have it while dining in, rather than takeout. It's still boiling hot when it reaches the table and it's served with more condiments. I love the kimchi and bean sprouts traditionally served with it.

Mmm, I made this dish on a cold rainy night. The flavors are very nice and complex -- I ate it slow and savored every bite. I can see this being a new staple for the wintertime!
