Hartleypool is a coastal town in Durham, north-west England.which boasted a shipbuilding industry during the nineteenth century - a target of German Navy shelling during World War I.
Hartlepool is humerously referred to as the town where "They Hung the Monkey", a reference to an alleged execution of a monkey that was washed ashore from a shipwreck during the Napoleonic wars and suspected of being a spy due to the fact he was wearing a little french naval uniform.
To this day, citizens of Hartlepool are sometimes referred to as "Monkey Hangers" or "Chimp Chokers".
