AT THE POOL

Happiness was a day at a pool

in the grass ringed round

with trees up to the sky

here I was god’s and my

grandpa’s lad – both died,

happiness is dangerous

in the evening the pool has lain down

so mirror-smooth that sky, trees and grass

repeat themselves below the ground

fear and longing both ask me

to come back

Rare to have both sons home over the Thanksgiving holiday, so we spent a pleasant hour at the billiard parlor. . .Lynn snapped this image on her cellphone.

One of the many geothermal jewels in Yellowstone's West Thumb Geyser Basin. Abyss is the deepest pool known in Yellowstone and received its name for its abyss-like depth.

West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone yet its location along the shore of Yellow-stone Lake ranks it as the most scenic.

One of the deeper hot springs in the park, Abyss Pool descends to 53 feet (16 meters). It varies from turquoise blue to emerald green to various shades of brown.

Hope your week is off to a great start!

THE ANIMAL CRUSADE

One day all the sties and burrows opened

And out came the cave-bear the mammoth the seafaring

cormorant, that poetic diving bird, the white-headed vulture

the rock-goat from the mountains, the sea unicorn

You could see by their snouts that they meant business

You could hear by their flapping wings and their burr

They had thrown off their humility, cast down their yoke

once imposed by Adam’s secretive hero

the one with the garden

They were, to cut a long story short, fed up

And the morals of the shotgun had been cast off

the flayed skin of flight had faded

The viper walked tall and the swine wore polaroid glasses

that lent him pleasant looks. The beavers

gnawed down telegraph poles and so cut off any form of communication

Predictably enough, the lion led the way black black

as black gold and gold-coloured as deep black

It was a magnificent procession, blinding to the eye

At the back the unicorn reported as missing, the dodo the passenger pigeon

as well as various viruses and the elated spermatozoids

So the holy animals

travelled the holy world

And do you know how or why?

Oh no, they just went travelling, they didn’t have a flag!

Sometimes ripped up laws out of sheer happiness

or bled a city dry

Now and then trampled on a Jesus

or struck down a prophet or a princess

They were beginning to get tired

Haste no longer necessary

The one day’s deities left the fire

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. I pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Walking tracks in the mid mountains are generally not as strenuous as those in the upper mountains. Try the gentle walks of South Hazelbrook where for over a hundred and fifteen years European walkers and nature lovers have been inspired by the majestic scenery of Terrace Falls Reserve. Here you will find a historic and complex layout of walking tracks.

Thoughtful walkers will appreciate the effort that went into creating the beautiful stone steps and gently-sloping paths that give access into this wonderland of tumbling waters, sandy ‘beaches’, still pools, peaceful rainforests, and strange rocks.

The old track layout had eight bridges providing easy access over Terrace Falls and Bedford Creeks at various points. All have been lost through floods or bushfires, but the watchful eye can spot remains at creek crossings.

The Mute Swan is a large, all-white waterfowl native to Eurasia, widely recognized for its long, gracefully curved neck and a distinctive orange bill with a black knob at the base. Despite its name, it is not completely silent and produces hisses, snorts, and grunts, though it is less vocal than other swan species.

Size and Appearance:

Mute swans are among the largest flying birds. Adults have brilliant white plumage, black feet, and a prominent black knob (basal knob) on their orange bill, which is larger in males (cobs). When swimming, they hold their necks in an elegant 'S' shape, often with their wings slightly raised in a display known as "busking".

Habitat and Diet:

They are found in a variety of aquatic environments, including ponds, lakes, rivers, canals, estuaries, and sheltered coastal areas. Their diet primarily consists of submerged aquatic vegetation, which they reach using their long necks.

Behavior:

Mute swans form strong, long-lasting pair bonds and are known for their devotion to their offspring. They are highly territorial, especially during the breeding season, and will aggressively defend their nests and cygnets (young swans) from perceived threats, including humans and dogs.

Cygnets:

Young swans are typically covered in greyish-brown down (sometimes white, in a morph called "Polish swan") and have a dull, grey-black bill. They grow quickly, reaching near-adult size within three months, and attain full white plumage and the adult orange bill by their second year.

Lifespan:

In the wild, mute swans can live for over 20 years, with an average lifespan of around 10-11 years.

In Culture and Law:

The mute swan is significant in human culture. It is the national bird of Denmark and a symbol of love in many cultures due to its monogamous nature. It is also the subject of the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "The Ugly Duckling".

In the UK, the British monarch retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, a law dating back to medieval times. This ownership is primarily exercised on certain stretches of the River Thames through the traditional annual ceremony of "Swan Upping," which now serves as a population health check.

Visited Mahon Pool for the first time on the weekend. Its a really nice location over in Maroubra on the south of Sydney. Took this 3 1/2 min long exposure about 20 mins after sunset. It was still pretty bright so I used a Cokin Circ polarizer for the 2 stops and then a GND8 for the sky. The sea was moving quite strongly which was nice.
