The 77.5-acre Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, located along the banks of the Little Lehigh Creek in Emmaus, Pa., was entrusted to Wildlands Conservancy in 1975 by the late Leonard Parker Pool, founder of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.
The Sanctuary features the Harry C. Trexler Environmental Educational Center, which houses the Lehigh River Watershed Exhibit. The Lehigh River Watershed Exhibit is a part of the Conservancy's environmental education outreach. School children from across the Lehigh Valley visit the Lehigh River Watershed Exhibit to learn about the wildlife in the Lehigh River Watershed. The Exhibit features a series of interactive displays presenting basic watershed concepts, a diorama of Pennsylvania mammals and birds, a live amphibian and reptile terrarium, a fresh-water stream aquarium, and a unique window seat that overlooks the ponds.
The Pool Wildlife Sanctuary is also the home of the Environmental Enrichment Center, which houses the Conservancy's Education Department offices and classrooms. The remainder of Wildlands Conservancy's offices can be found in the white farmhouse.
The grounds also feature a pavilion, a bird blind, an arboretum, ponds, nature trails, a collection of native Pennsylvania trees, deep woods and wildflower meadow. Open year-round to the public, seven days per week from dawn to dusk, the Sanctuary is known for its excellent nature education calendar and activities for children and adults.
A little trip down south of the border. As blogged at www.katewares.com/2012/08/10/august-break-2012-day-10/
Explanation:
It was so hot last week that I got an old plastic wading pool out for the dogs. They ignored it but the water stayed there. A few days later we were moving the scaffolding to a new spot and I didn't want the flowers that were in the way to be wasted so I cut a large number of them and plopped them in the wading pool until our work was done. Then I forgot they were there. Today I took them out, threw them in the woods and started to dump the water. And then I looked at it. The sun was shining. The flowers were yellow, the pool was purple, the leaves were green. The opportunity was accidental. Wish my skills were better....
The pool at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, and the pool where the Academy Swim Club meets and trains.
If you live in South Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Academy Swim Club (ASC) is where you go for swim lessons. And if your child is interested in going beyond the basics, ASC also trains swimmers for competition.
The last weekend of World Wide KAP Week fell on a swimming competition that both of my daughters were swimming in on the ASC team. I asked the permission of the ASC coaches to do aerial photography over the event, and was given the go-ahead.
Unfortunately the conditions were far from ideal. I'd broken my mid-wind kite the first day of WWKW, and hadn't got around to fixing it. The wind was variable, gusting over 20kts and lulling well under 8kts. I didn't take into account the lift along the tree line upwind of the pool, and wound up having to deal with an over-flying rokkaku midway through the session. Rather than risk a real accident I backed off and flew downwind of the pool, landing my gear when the break in the competition came to a close.
Both WWKW and the swim meet continue through Sunday. If the conditions improve, I'll try to fly again and get better coverage of the events. If not... Better safe than sorry. I'll live to KAP another day.
I'm glad Dad got your camera, otherwise I wouldn't be responsible for the consequences... You know I'm the life guard around and you're not supposed to be alone here!
Ainda bem que o papai pegou a sua câmera; eu não seria responsável pelas consequências... Você sabe muito bem que sou o salva-vidas daqui e você não deveria estar sozinha aà dentro!
