Central Lout Desert,Iran, March 2004

One of the differences between the desert(بیابان )and salti desert (کویر)is that the surface of the salti desert has salt ingredients!

However, this part of the desert has salt because the salti river has brought it! Because of having unusual amount of salt in the soil, the exterior surface of the ground cannot sustain under the very hot sun and starts to overshape!

At first ,the surface starts to shrinke in the shape of salti polygons and then all the polygones become like big bowls!

These features are very visible examples of the self-organzing landscapes. The ground surface is not the same all the time. They change their appearance by climate change until they reach to a new balance!( a good smaple for Chaos Theory!)

Update 4/8/09: This is not a new post but wanted to bring it back to the front to let everyone know about a great book that was recently released, it's called Photographing Oregon by Greg Vaughn. He did a great job on this book and I would recommend it for those wanting to photograph the scenic beauty of Oregon. I mention it to since this image was selected to represent the Alvord Desert area. Other great local photographers contributing images to this book include Darren White, Zack Schnepf, Jesse Estes, Sean Bagshaw and more. Happy touring!

Taken seconds after the sun broke over the mountain tops surrounding the Alvord Playa. A very chilly morning, but beautiful.

The Basilica of St. Vitus (Czech Kostel svatého Víta) is one of the major shrines in the city. Founded in 1309, it was taken between 1407 and 1439. The basilica is based on a basilica plan with three vessels, all being representative of the Gothic style.

A slender tower crowned with a polygonal spire, stands at the corner of the west facade. The interior retains some frescoes and houses the tomb of William Rosenberg (Rosenberg in Czech).

Since January 1st 2010, I have been taking and uploading one square picture each day.

I would be most grateful if you would not insert images, and/or group invites; thank you!

Rhododendron is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family (Ericaceae), either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia, although it is also widespread throughout the Southern Highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. It is the national flower of Nepal. Most species have showy flowers. Azaleas make up two subgenera of Rhododendron. They are distinguished from "true" rhododendrons by having only five anthers per flower. Rhododendron is a genus characterised by shrubs and small to (rarely) large trees, the smallest species growing to 10–100 cm tall, and the largest, R. protistum var. giganteum, reported to 30 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged; leaf size can range from 1–2 cm to over 50 cm, exceptionally 100 cm in R. sinogrande. They may be either evergreen or deciduous. In some species, the undersides of the leaves are covered with scales (lepidote) or hairs (indumentum). Some of the best known species are noted for their many clusters of large flowers. There are alpine species with small flowers and small leaves, and tropical species such as section Vireya that often grow as epiphytes. Species in this genus may be part of the heath complex in oak-heath forests in eastern North America. They have frequently been divided based on the presence or absence of scales on the abaxial (lower) leaf surface (lepidote or elepidote). These scales, unique to subgenus Rhododendron, are modified hairs consisting of a polygonal scale attached by a stalk. Rhododendron are characterised by having inflorescences with scarious (dry) perulae, a chromosome number of x=13, fruit that has a septicidal capsule, an ovary that is superior (or nearly so), stamens that have no appendages, and agglutinate (clumped) pollen. The Rhododendron genus is the largest of the genera in the Ericaceae family, with 1,024 species, though estimates vary from 850-1000 depending on the authority used, (Fayaz 2012) and is morphologically diverse. Consequently the taxonomy has been historically complex. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just discovered this while fiddling around with pieces. Quite sturdy, maybe a bit "illegal".

The town has a rich history, with many remains dating from the Bronze Age and Neolithic times such as a triangular polished stone ax from the Neolithic period, a flat copper ax, a bronze needle with nine bracelets, a spearhead and an iron sword.

The Evangelical Church is a Romanesque basilica built in the 13th century, with its three Romanesque naves and the choir still preserved. Only the apse was replaced in the 15th century by a polygonal altar. Later, in 1750, the tower was built on the west side. Of the old fortification, only one bastion is preserved on the north side, as well as some parts of the defensive wall.
