Now that's camouflage! If it hadn't flicked it's wings, I would have trodden on it!

For Macro Monday theme for 14 November 2016, "Mystery". My first post to the Macro Mondays group. Looks like fun! I will reveal the identity of this subject after a number of my contacts have time to respond.

Update. With expert help on iNaturalist, this appears to be a Lycoperdon, likely L. perlatum.

Death Valley, California

The salt flats in Badwater Basin will often dry into intriguing polygonal shapes. Impurities such as mud will given different effects.

I caught a flare yesterday. A perfect nonagon (9 sides) for the discerning polygon aficionado. Unfortunately, this Pelican got in the way a bit!

The shape of lens flare is controlled by the number of blades controlling the aperture, as is the bokeh pattern in other shots. This means I've 9 blades. I just looked this up btw, thought I'd share in case somebody else didn't know.

Oh and the pelican is an immature California Brown Pelican (if it was an adult the head would be yellow/white).

A vertical wall of geometric wall and window panels. A sort-of-monochrome (dark green and bluish grey in the window panels), sort-of-abstract subject.

The Panamint Mountains are aglow with the new light of the day nearly perfectly reflected by the waters of the temporary return of Lake Manly at North America’s lowest point. I have been to this spot so many times and every time it is different. Rock hard salt crusted muddy polygons previously dominated this landscape resembling miniature tectonic plates crashing into each other uplifting mountain little mountain ranges at their borders. The waters of Hurricane Hilary have completely dissolved them, resetting the etch-a-sketch that is this dynamic landscape. Everywhere in the water salt crystals area already building up as the water, less than half of its original depth, increases in salt concentration as the enormous evaporative power of Death Valley does its work. From high elevations looking down the water has taken on a very definite green hue, and I was enchanted to see that color come through on this sunrise as it is not so visible from the ground. The resulting sunrise palette was sublime as the incredibly salty water reflected the undulated wavy clouds high above.

Death Valley's Bad Water, at -86 meters, is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. The salt polygons are about a 1-mile walk out onto the valley floor. They provide a compelling foreground for sunset, sunrise, and storm compositions.

Une montagne noire baptisée Duhamel, au sommet se trouve le SaarPolygon. Un monument étrange à la gloire des gueules noires Sarroise !
