Multi-hued lavas, intrusive rocks and cemented gravels give the mountain its range of colours. It rises nearly 3000 feet above the surrounding Toklat River valley floor.

This bust of Caracalla (reigned 211-217 CE) is made of two separate materials: marble and porphyry. Porphyry is a durable rock that had to be imported from quarries in Egypt. It was prized for its color as well as its durability. Another thing of note on this bust is the traces of paint that can still be seen on Caracalla’s face, particular around his eyebrows and mustache. One can imagine how alive this statue must have seemed when it was fully painted in its prime.
