Denali, Polychrome Pass

Alaska Denali National Park, Panorama taken from point on Polychrome mountain

AK-1065 Denali National Park Polychrome Panorama

Hagia Sophia's dome seems rendered weightless by the unbroken arcade of arched windows under it, which help flood the colourful interior with light. The dome is carried on pendentives—four concave triangular sections of masonry which solve the problem of setting the circular base of a dome on a rectangular base. At Hagia Sophia the weight of the dome passes through the pendentives to four massive piers at the corners. Between them the dome seems to float upon four great arches.

At the western (entrance) and eastern (liturgical) ends, the arched openings are extended by half domes carried on smaller semidomed exedras. Thus a hierarchy of dome-headed elements builds up to create a vast oblong interior crowned by the main dome, a sequence unexampled in antiquity.

The structure has been severely damaged several times by earthquakes. The dome collapsed after an earthquake in 558; its replacement fell in 563. There were additional partial collapses in 989 after which an Armenian architect named Trdat was commissioned to repair the damage and again 1346. In the era of Süleyman the Magnificent, Mimar Sinan (Sinan the Architect) built extra attachments to prevent it from collapsing.

All interior surfaces are sheathed with polychrome marbles, green and white with purple porphyry and gold mosaics, encrusted upon the brick. On the exterior, simple stuccoed walls reveal the clarity of massed vaults and domes. (Wikipedia)

This print was slightly lighter than the previous example before toning.

Polychrome print on Forte PW15

1st toner SE1 Selenium 1+20 2 mins on the left,

2nd toner MT10 Gold (16th print in 450ml) 2 mins - not a good idea, because the print was already too dark for this toning, the density increases considerably as expected. A wrong decision, but an example to demonstrate what happens and how such results can be corrected.

On the right, an attempt to lighten a print that was far too dark. Because there is still enough untoned silver after the gold toning, it can be bleached with Ferricyanide and then fixed.

Ferricyanide-Bromide bleach 1+100 1:30 mins, ATS Fixer 1+5 15 secs.

Result: reddish Selenium shadows and bluish lights (much bluer than before bleaching).

A drawback is the excessive brightening of the highlights if bleaching is carried out until the lower mid tones are brightened as desired.

This focus-stacked macro of a polychrome jasper sphere is very interesting. It makes me think of a colorful moss mottled and oxidized stone wall covering.

As usual, this was taken using the Cognisys Stackshot. About 40 images stacked and merged using Helicon Focus and processed in Lightroom and Photoshop with tender love ;)

Back then I used a Canon EOS-1DS MarkIII fitted with an EF24-105mm f/4 IS USM lens.

To the best of my knowledge this shop is still unoccupied.

Terraced two-bay two-storey house, built c.1870, having return to rear and shopfront to front (south) elevation

Here is as description from the National Inventory Of Architectural Heritage:

"This building forms part of a terrace of shops with residential space upstairs. The composition of the façade is replicated to its neighbouring buildings, creating a sense of uniformity and making a pleasing contribution to the streetscape. Its shopfront, which provides contextual interest, is well executed and enlivened by decorative fluting and curved edges to the brick pilasters. Although no longer used as a shop, it is well maintained. Polychrome brick to the first floor and chimneystack provide an element of visual contrast, and imply a date of construction in the late Victorian era. Timber sash windows and granite sills add architectural interest to this modest but aesthetically pleasing building."

We continue looking for existing Romanesque elements in this temple, and the best place we can go to find them is the Astorga Cathedral Museum (Léon) - Spain.

The Romanesque door of the cloister, dating from the beginning of the 13th century, is located in the south wall, now in disuse; It contains two mochetas of elegant beauty, a feminine one on the left side, and this one that we see on the right side shows a man's head that could partly remind us of existing sculptures in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia).

Winged Scarab

Egyptian, Late Period, 525-332 B.C.

Faience with polychrome

Meaning: It seemed to the ancient Egyptians that the young scarab beetles emerged spontaneously from the burrow were they were born. Therefore they were worshipped as "Khepera", which means "he was came forth." This creative aspect of the scarab was associated with the creator god Atum.

The ray-like antenna on the beetle's head and its practice of dung-rolling caused the beetle to also carry solar symbolism. The scarab-beetle god Khepera was believed to push the setting sun along the sky in the same manner as the bettle with his ball of dung. In many artifacts, the scarab is depicted pushing the sun along its course in the sky.

Polychrome Pass at Denali National Park...unbelievable!

When my wife started talking about a possible trip to Alaska I started to look at places that were visually interesting and Polychrome Overlook was one of them that stood out as you can see why. The dramatic clouds were just icing on the cake.

Not a fan of selective color, and this isn't.

Polychromed wood sculpture by artist John Hooper in the mall outside Saint John City Hall, Saint John, New Brunswick

I took this while trying to get around the sheep on Polychrome Pass. We'd decided to take a walk up the road and the sheep blocked our path, after an hour or so of taking their photos they moved to where we could get around them.

They live with pretty spectacular scenery on Polychrome Pass.

. . . A picture up the mountainside in Polychrome Pass in Denali National Park. But should this pass be renamed for the historic Kodak film that shows rich vibrant colors? One of my Facebook friends accidentally called it by that name, and I thought "it really makes sense"!

The view from Polychrome Pass in Denali National Park. The day was quite overcast, but the view remained breathtaking.

The impressive representation of "The Saviour", in the center of the Romanesque tympanum of the twelfth century marvels us, still retaining much of its polychrome.

We see Christ Majesty, within the almond surrounded by angels and stars, wearing a long robe with elegant folds, with the right hand indicates salvation and with the left the path that sinners will follow.

The Romanesque church of Sainte Foy of Conques (France) was built in the 11th and 12th centuries, and is part of the so-called pilgrimage churches, on the French route to Santiago de Compostela (Spain).
