Perfect fall day in Chicago. Went for a bike ride out to the lakeshore looking for fall foliage. Most of the trees along the bike path are just barely starting to be tinged with yellow. I had pretty much figured I was just too early for red leaves when I saw these. This is on Northerly Island - most of it is still closed for renovation, but the part closest to the planetarium is still open.
Taken with Sony Nex 5T with circular polarizer, and then minor adjustments in Photoshop Touch on iPad. I notice that in this one, I moved the angle around to frame the Sears tower between the trees, but it also resulted in a less ideal angle for the polarizer with respect to the sun - resulting in a sky that is darker on the right hand side of the photo than the left. The earlier photo at a different angle did not have that problem, because it was more perfectly 90 degrees from the sun. But I think the polarizer still helped bring out the red and blue overall here, probably.
This is the Marquam bridge in Portland, OR. Supposedly, this is the busiest bridge in Oregon, as it carries close to 140,000 vehicles per day. Not sure who counted them and how it was done, but that's what it is being said about this bridge. Anyway, this is what the bridge looks like from a distance.
Single exposure, taken with Sony A7R, 73mm, 30-second exposure, f/10, ISO 160, B+W circular polarizer.
Vitamin C is amazing stuff. It just generates the most colorful patterns.
These pictures are the first time I tried messing with the growth. To sped up the evaporation of the solvent (water) I'm using a hot plate set at about 70C. At one point I took the partially crystallized slide off the plate to look at it under the microscope. The crystals continued to grow (fantastic to watch) but they got bigger.
I decided to manipulate the patterns by pulling the slide on and off the hot plate. So the bigger crystals are hot grown and the smaller room temperature.
Cheers.

I put various things on to microscope slides such as salt and sugar solutions and some household cleaners and let them dry. This is Cillit bang lime scale cleaner that dried with a nice crystalline structure on the slide. I then photographed it using my Canon 650D with a 18 135 zoom reversed and extension tubes to get as close as possible using cross polarized light.
Viewer 2 fun. 60" @ f/2.0 with a polarizer on, never used one at night before. Didn't know how it would affect night exposures.

Regardless of our religion I would like to share the e-mail I have received today from a good friend showing her perspective in life as follows:
Choosing to Become Like Our God
by Ms. Irine Escobar
and I quote:
Hello Guys
Peace be with you all, in our Lords name.
Allow me to add some thoughts about our meditation today because it answers some questions we often ask ourselves but never get to find the right answer.
Someone asked: Why is it that our God allows evil to have a say in this world? Why is it that we often have people beside us or within our community or neighbor or officemate or just someone that tends to ruin our seemingly beautiful day??
ANSWER: GOD is building our character. As the meditation says: our God is more interested in who we are and who we’ll become. Is it a test? In a way, yes. A test for us to know how strong and capable we are. Remember that when you accepted God as your Savior, the His Spirit has dwelt in you. And because of this, the fruit of the Spirit will flow out of your character. Not in an instant, but gradually as you become closer to our Lord, we become more like Him.
In Galatians 5:22-23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
This is the outcome of having the Holy Spirit within us. So, let us always be reminded that once we proclaimed our God as our Savior and Lord, we have the Spirit within us. This helps us develop our character according to what God wants us to be.
Don’t allow the enemy to win by succumbing to the temptation of getting back at him. That enemy is laughing his heart out if you do. Don’t allow the enemy to take away the joy you have in our Lord and our Saviour’s joy in you. Don’t allow the evil things of this world rob the joy that God have in us.
And if still you’re finding it hard to “control” yourself…then always meditate on:
Philippians 4:8 Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable (to that person)- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think of such things.
Just think about it. If you think positively it will also flow out of you positively. Think of the positive things that person has in his/her character and all the bad things about that person or situation will disappear, replaced by the love our God has for us. If our God can erase our sins and decided not to make records of it all, who are we then not to forgive? Who are we then to think ill of your brother/sister?
So be on guard of your reactions, feelings, etc. It may be hard, yes, that is why we must immerse ourselves daily, every minute of our lives, with the Word of God. For we can do all things through God who strengthens us.
Believe that He who is in you is greater than he who is in this world. Let us choose to become more like our Saviour.
Glory to God!!!

Me llamó la atención este escaparate. Lástima que no pueda haber movimiento para mostrar lo graciosos que eran los muñequitos; cada uno se movía de forma distinta. Muy trabajado el escaparate :)

Well, I was out with The Bando yesterday...why these guys let me hang around with them, I'll never know!
We downed some java and then headed for the wintry wilds of nature and all the breathtaking glory it has to offer, with the sole purpose of capturing awesome images using our digital pixel-gatherers...every shot I took was crap! Crap I tell you!
Coincidentally... while we were out there...oh, never mind that!
To be somewhat fair to myself, I was experimenting with a newly acquired (read: given to me by one Monsieur JW Vraets) FOTGA Slim Fader Variable ND Filter Adjustable ND2 to ND400 77mm Neutral Density. None-the-less, everything was either over-exposed, blotchy, blurry, blotchy and blurry, or just plainly so bereft of detail or composition that, while reviewing them on the computer monitor, I could hear me ol' granpappy sarcastically cackling in my brain saying, "Hoo hoo! A cleptopyromaniacyakyak could have taken better shots than that that!"
"Ya, thanks gramps, " I muttered aloud despondently.
Just as I was about to close the file, I noticed one that was so over-exposed, Drew Barrymore would have been embarrassed! For kicks, I tonemapped it and the result was an image with this checkerboard pattern integrated into the elements. Now, most photographers would have uttered, "Shit! Another dud!" But, since I am not one of those and merely just own a camera, I blurted out, "Cool!"
Well, no sooner said...
Anyway, at the next Bando 'renkonti' (its French or something for 'meeting up and chatting about things' - a similar occurrence happened on Coruscant at the Jedi Temple), I will inquire just how such an abstraction befell my inglorious work of art (original photo) and maybe, if Matt pulls out a piece of paper and pen, while JW attempts to explain it in 'layman terms' (of course, Barry will just be oogling the girls meantime), I just might understand it!

Blindly faffing my way to new effects which might come in handy at a later date.
I'm into how the light seems to be emanating from my wrist to form a circle.
This is a pair of quite dark Polarized Sunglasses. Held up to the sky in full sun, with sun behind me. The Glasses are held in front of a large green Frangipani tree. There are some high wispy clouds, patches of clear sky and some lower large white clouds to the right. The frame of the sunglasses are black and the lighter coloured parts of the arms are bright orange. The white spot in the right eye piece is the suns reflection.
Of course all the background is out of focus being held close to camera. Taken just to show the effect of the infrared spectrum. Shot in BW mode. Straight out of camera, only cropping.
This photo was taken in Trelleborg, Sweden. I like it because of the strong, defined body of the wasp compared with the softness of the flowers. Same day, I got stinged by a wasp directly in the tongue while eating an apple. I had to pull out the sting - At least I know now that I am not allergic (:
