Polar bears have very good eyesight and hearing although their sense of smell is their most highly developed sense. These remarkable bears have a transparent eyelid (nictitating membrane) that work like a pair of sunglasses filtering out the excessive brightness of snow and sun. They also work as waterproof goggles underwater.
Tatqiq takes a swing at the San Diego Zoo. To celebrate International Polar Bear Day, we asked our experts at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research to weigh in on some common misconceptions regarding polar bears and the impacts of climate change. Learn more: bit.ly/znIPBD17
This is a movie made of 87 images fires at 20fps in bursts, made into a quicktime movie at 6fps to slow the action some. It looks like a white dog but its the only predator that will actively hunt humans
Even though many people mistakenly think Canada is a land of perpetual ice and snow, the only Polar Bears within a thousand kilometers of me is at the Toronto Zoo, where I captured this one.
On my bucket list is a trip to see these magnificent (and dangerous) creatures in their natural habitat.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) mother and cub check out the photographers' boat from a spit of land in the Beaufort Sea. Kaktovik, Barter Island, Alaska.
Taken at the Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge on the south shore of Hudson Bay. This is full frame..that being said I believe this was taken thru the fence surrounding the lodge. We where on the ground with these guys, but this might of been closer than we ever got to them outside the fence.
These two are brothers and at the time they have a lot of fun together. In one or two years they'll be adults and won't live that easy together, and one of them will have to leave into another zoo. It was amazing to watch these two gicantic animals playing in the water, but while watching them I felt so sad thinking on their future in nature. The global warming will endanger so many wonderful creatures. When will we ever learn..?

Polar bears are actually black, not white. Polar bear fur is translucent, and only appears white because it reflects visible light. Beneath all that thick fur, their skin is jet black.
Even from a boat, watching an adult Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) from a safe distance, the bear is an impressive sight. Here an adult Polar Bear caught our scent when the wind shifted. These bears will stalk and kill humans - we are on their menu - so we were happy to be on a boat with a working motor. Stuck around just long enough to get some frame-filling images of this awesome and beautiful animal.

The polar bear is a large bear native to the Arctic and nearby areas. It is closely related to the brown bear, and the two species can interbreed. The polar bear is the largest extant species of bear and land carnivore by body mass, with adult males weighing 300–800 kg.

This is an older shot of the Polar Bear exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Shot with my 7D and my Rokinon fish, I caught the polar bear just standing on top of the underwater glass tunnel.
My Flickr contact JP Diroll has wonderful shots of the zoo, and some great ones of this scene, I highly recommend you checking out his stream: www.flickr.com/photos/jdiroll/. He has one jaw dropping shot of the the polar bears in particular that I highly recommend.

Our polar bears came to us as orphans. With little to no chance of survival in the wild, we were happy to provide them sanctuary here. Unfortunately, climate change has created a conservation crisis for this iconic species, and their persistence in the wild is jeopardized by record-breaking sea ice losses and increasing industrial-scale human activity. In areas where the sea ice melts completely in the summer, polar bears must move ashore. Climate change has extended this ice free-period, and bears may scavenge to avoid starving, or their months-long fast may be extended until ice forms again. This extended time on land can increase the likelihood that bears will be in contact with human settlements; a situation that can be dangerous for both humans and bears.
Happy family of polar bears. Novosibirsk Zoo.
