The Polar Bear is the largest extant bear species, as well as the largest extant predatory carnivore.

We watched this polar bear from the deck of the expedition ship for over three hours in spite of the temperature, never knowing which shot may be the last as it wandered around. This is just one of several hundred images I took over the time! There are more of the bear and other arctic wildlife here: www.flickr.com/photos/148629640@N02/albums/72157684119918274

Many thanks to everyone who takes the time to stop by, comment, award and/or fave.

It's getting warmer again. One who doesn't love summer heat is polar bear Corinna at our zoo even if she has her pool where she can cool down a bit. She also has the possiblity to go indoors whenever she wants even if that means that some visitors don't have a chance to see her. This is a photo I took on my last visit to the zoo in May and I decided to post it today because it makes a nice Tongue Tuesday shot. HTT ! :)

Lonely Polar Bear strolling in the hills.

East Coast - Svalbard - Spitsbergen - Norway

We drive to the East coast of Spitsbergen. This is the place where we usually can spot the polar bears. We drive on the glaciers to the East Coast and look out for any danger. Fortunately, in the distance, we see a large polar bear walking across the plain and very far we spotted a mother polar bear with her pups.

Polar bears are beautiful yet dangerous animals. They are to be respected when you come face to face with them in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Sometimes a little too close for comfort, but we all watched out for each other.

Tough to tell if these large, male Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) were fighting for real, or just sparring. When animals this large get going, the fur flies.

Polar Bear stalking Reindeer on Edgeoya, Svalbard

In the late fall, polar bears gather along the shores of Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba, to wait for the bay to freeze up so they can go out on the sea ice to hunt seals. A curious polar bear walked up to our SUV, which was stopped along the shoreline, allowed its portrait to be taken and then wandered off again. No bears or people were harmed in the taking of this portrait :-)

Adolescent male Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) battling on the surface of the bay. These guys play-fought right in front of us for almost an hour. Most of the action was going on under the surface, but there was plenty of biting and sniping on the surface.

The famous polar bear warning sign on the edge of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Beyond this point you need a rifle (or be with someone that has one) because of the threat.

As he walked closer he did not take his eyes off of us, except to turn and sniff the air.

In this capture of the polar bear you can see all his fur around his paws.

And also, if you view large, you can see that his fur is really not white. The fur is made up of translucent tubes, better for warmth, insulation and floating. There are so many pieces of fur that the totality of them looks like he is white.

Best viewed large.

Female out for a stroll on the edge of a lead

My photos of this Polar Bear when he first arrived at this Walrus carcass reveal a rather white-face. But as he fed his muzzle became increasingly blood-stained and red. Although it looks like he has closed eyes, if you zoom in they are clearly open, just very small. This is quite a good shot of his teeth too, well, the lower jaw at least. Enough to see that you wouldn't want to get bitten by one. Food is scarce in the high arctic but a Walrus would be too much for one Polar Bear in one sitting. But if another bear approached there would almost certainly be aggression until the dominance hierarchy was established, and the subservient one would await its turn to feed. I once saw a fresh whale carcass with several dozen Polar Bears in the vicinity. But only half a dozen big males were actually feeding, with the smaller males, and females with cubs just waiting patiently until the big ones had finished.

This was taken at Virgohamna on Spitsbergen, close to the old whaling settlement of Smeerenburg. It was also the site of a hangar for a number of attempts to reach the North Pole by balloon. The bay was named by Swedish explorer Salomon Andrée after his steam ship Virgo in 1896. Andrée also built a hangar here from which he made two attempts to reach the North Pole by hot air balloon, the second one was fatal.
