While the trails have taken me to some interesting adventures, not only last year but in previous years, 2019 was more of a settling in and adjustment period for me: getting used to a new home, getting a new driver's license, new doctors, changing my photo business name, getting used to being around more people in the home life (harder than one might think, since I'm a loner by nature), doing more of what I never thought I'd ever do (cooking, yardwork, helping my sister navigate the ins and outs of a divorce and other issues). There were highs and lows, both big and small.
The beginning of 2020 looks like it will still be a period of quietude (is that a word?). I've been trying to think of what great thing to write here, and nothing comes to mind. The "travel bug" is biting down hard, but I have responsibilities to attend to, so no big photo trips planned until later this year, and perhaps, a possible longer-term photo journey, if things pan out (not holding my breath here, so I won't say anything further to jinx it). For now, this quiet time is used to build up my brand, spiffy up my website (still working on that key wording thing, although I'm almost finished with the national parks galleries, which pleases me). Oh, I have a new Twitter site (@rebecca_latson).
These are small steps which will, like a snowball being rolled into a snowperson, lead to bigger things, I do believe. The trails *will* take me somewhere this 2020, but those leading lines are vanishing points to destinations unknown. In the meantime, to borrow a phrase from a Facebook friend:
"I plan to carry the momentum of small steps on to bigger things in 2020."
Wherever the trails may take YOU in 2020, remember to pack out what you pack in, stay safe, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Happy New Year, everybody!

A woman stands on a terminal moraine (Jokulödur) as she looks over small icebergs floating on a proglacial lake called Jökulsárlón, which is known as Icelands famous “Iceberg Lagoon” or “Glacier Lagoon”. A terminal moraine, like this one thatthe woman is standing on, marks the farthest reaches of a glacier, its terminus, at a given point in time. They are usually built from rocks and debris that are transported in the ice to the glacier’s toe where they drop out as the ice melts. Jökulsárlón is a proglacial lake that formed behind a moraine in the valley left when the glacier seen in the photo, Breiðamerkurjökull, retreated. Proglacial lakes can also be formed by ice dams.
Breiðamerkurjökull, is the glacial tongue that extends from southern part of the Vatnajökull ice cap. The Vatnajökull ice field covers an area of 3,200 square miles (8,400 square km) with an average ice thickness of more than 3,000 feet (900 meters). Several volcanoes, some active, and other mountains lie beneath it. By both volume and area, this monster glacier is the largest in Iceland and second largest in Europe after the ice cap on Severny Island which is the northern island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in Russia. Most of Vatnajökull including the Breiðamerkurjökull lies in Vatnajökull National Park.
Breiðamerkurjökull is constantly retreating, breaking and melting, which means Jökulsárlón (The Iceberg Lagoon) continues to increase in size. It is less than a 100 years old, but is currently the deepest lake in Iceland. The glacier tongue provides the lagoon with all of its icebergs, which perpetually calve from off its end and tumble into the waters. As seen in the photo, the lagoon can have many icebergs. They float for around until they are small enough to make their way down an outlet, Jökulsa, to the sea which reportedly can take as long as five years. When they finally do escape the lagoon into the ocean, many wash up on nearby Diamond Beach. This black volcanic sand beach is aptly named because it is littered with small, glittering chunks of ice.

The match in one tweet: History made! Thunder make 4-159 to win the #SydneySmash thanks to a classic 80no from Mr Cricket & some fireworks from Dre-Russ #BBL05
The hero: Mike Hussey has enjoyed plenty of fairytales through his career and 18,287 parochial fans got to witness another at Spotless Stadium tonight. The Thunder captain and eternal fan favourite, Mr Cricket made a stunning unbeaten 80 from 59 balls to take his side to 4-159 and put them in a great position for victory. The innings was dotted with the usual Hussey trademarks – with no less than four maximums, including one from the final ball of the innings.
Andre Russell was expected to shine with the bat but his bowling is vastly under-rated. He was fast and hostile and looked to take the Sixers' batsmen by surprise. A cracking yorker knocked over Brad Haddin and he bowled dangerman Nic Maddinson, too, before returning to remove Nathan Lyon. The Jamaican faced just five balls for four not out and showed glimpses of his athleticism in the field, but it was his clinical showing with the ball that put the home side on track for the win. Honourable mention to Shane Watson, who chimed in with three wickets to seal the deal.
The victim: Michael Lumb made 34 but nonetheless had a night to forget – his team lost, he copped a questionable lbw decision, and he dropped this…
WATCH: Lumb drops a sitter The moment: The first ball of the match's sixth over, Jackson Bird bowling to Hussey. SIX! It was a cracking stroke –advancing down the track, meeting the ball on the half volley and lifting it deep over long off – and signalled the return of everyone's favourite Twenty20 tournament. It also removed any question marks about Mr Cricket's decision to play another season, with the veteran leftie proving, once again, that class is permanent. The surprise: The Sixers have been renowned throughout their BBL existence as a side that fights hard and refuses to give in, no matter the situation. So it was a shock to see their middle and lower order fold dramatically when the Thunder applied the screw. At one point, the BBL|04 runners-up lost 5-12, surrendering the match in the process.
The talking point: The streak is over! Four seasons and seven matches of dominance came to a spectacular end at Spotless Stadium, thanks to a class all-round performance from the Thunder and a rusty effort from the Sixers. The stat: As well as being their first defeat in the Sydney Smash, this is also the first time the Sixers have lost their opening match of a BBL season. The wash-up: The Thunder can't afford to get carried away with this wonderful win – last year they began in similar fashion only to fall apart mid-season. The Sixers meanwhile have enough experience to avoid panic – it's two points lost, but there are still 14 to collect.
3 years ago i was invited to participate in a really interesting project, a game to give inspiration and motivation, a game to helps people to get insights of their lives. Efrat and Yaron, two lovely people based in Israel, asked the permission of use of one of my photographs. Of course I said yes, and I'm proud to be part of this creative and unique project. I have just received one of these exquisite designed and packaged pieces, and i have to say the game came out really amazing.
