About Khao Sam Roi Yot

Located in coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, it is the first marine national park of Thailand. Khao Sam Roi Yot means "The mountain with three hundred peaks" and refers to a series of limestone hills along the Gulf of Thailand with highest one at 605m above the sea level. The northwest corner of the mountain range is called Thung Sam Roi Yot and is mainly freshwater marsh covering nearly 37% of the national park which makes it the largest wetlands area in Thailand.

The main attractions of the national park are Phraya Nakhon Cave with it's iconic royal pavilion and huge chambers, Kaeo Cave and Thung Sam Roi Yot Freshwater Marsh. The park is also an attractive destination for it's rich wildlife in mangrove forests, beautiful beaches, limestone islands, trails and view points. It is easily acessible, only 60 km south from Hua Hin and nearly 3 hours from Bangkok.

Before anyone points out that a male Swan is not a Gander, I do know it is a "Cob". But the barge on the left is clearly named "Gander" and I thought it was the best name for this sunset view!

The last few days we have had the "saharan" dust in the atmosphere and there have been some tremendous sunsets and sunrises as a consequence. It had been pretty grey and hazy all day and I was not motivated to go out with the camera in those conditions. So I was busy in the garden and as the evening went on the sky started to get interesting. So, just before sunset I walked to the nearby Marina and I was blessed with these conditions.

The water in the Marina was constantly being rippled by the Ducks and Swans, but I did manage to get this Swan in the frame gliding towards the camera.

A series of three rocky points along the Big Sur coast just after sunset. The one actually called Rocky Point is in the distance. The rocks themselves are granodiorite that was created long ago somewhere far south of here and which has since slid north on the Pacific Plate.

I love to hunt behind a good pointing dog and watch them use their noses to find grouse. I do this primarily in October in the beautiful fall forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The Ryman breed of English Setters are characterized as "old men's hunting dogs" and at 77 I qualify. I don't shoot very well anymore, but I don't know if I want to kill anything anyway. In the last three years I have bagged zero birds. The dog points them. I shoot and miss and we move on.

When we get home I don't have to clean anything and I am happy with that.

In the image my dog Bonnie is pointing a grouse as the sun drops in the west. I missed it!

Excerpt from historicplaces.ca:

Description of Historic Place

The Navy Hall stands alone in a carefully manicured park setting just below Fort George National Historic Site. Designed with clear, clean lines, it is a low, rectangular, stone-clad structure with a hipped-roof clad in copper, and with a symmetrical organization of its windows and entry points. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value

The Navy Hall is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.

Historical Value:

The Navy Hall is a very good example of a building associated with the beginnings of the heritage movement in the first half of the 20th century. It illustrates changing approaches to the management of important historic buildings over time. In particular, it illustrates the role of aesthetics in conservation in the 1930s. Originally a commissariat storehouse, regular troops, the militia and also the Boy Scouts used the building, built in 1815. In the 1930s, the building was taken over by the Niagara Parks Commission.

Architectural Value:

The Navy Hall is valued for its good aesthetic design. The exterior fabric of the structure, the stone cladding, the copper clad roof, and the enhanced symmetry of the fenestration are features of the 1930s intervention. These features, clearly of a later era and philosophy, reflect the classical revival tastes of the period and the design idiom of the Niagara Parks Commission. Good functional design is evidenced in the placement of doors and windows, and in the spatial arrangement and planning of the interior.

Environmental Value:

The Navy Hall reinforces the landscaped parkway that runs along the Niagara lakefront and is a familiar landmark to residents and to visitors.

Character-Defining Elements

The character-defining elements of the Navy Hall should be respected.

Its good aesthetic, good functional design and good quality materials and craftsmanship, for example:

-the simple, rectangular massing.

-the low-pitched hipped roof, the copper roof cladding, and the symmetrically placed chimneys.

-the stone cladding of the exterior walls, the small multi-paned windows and large entrances.

-the interior spatial arrangement of the principal rooms.

The manner in which the Navy Hall reinforces the landscaped setting and is a familiar landmark, as evidenced by:

-its simple design and materials that harmonize with the landscaped parkway consisting of well-maintained lawns and walks, all introduced as part of the Niagara Park Commission’s parkway landscaping in the 1930s.

-its visibility and recognition by those frequenting the parkway and the National Historic Site.

The official City Explorer Tour Trams. 2011

I think these have been replaced by hop on - hop off Double Decker red buses today.

These Trams seemed a little bit slow and may have held up the traffic flow. They didn't run on rails but had tyres and could travel anywhere.

(Perth Tram Company.)

Climb aboard a wooden replica tram that resembles the first trams to operate in Perth. Friendly drivers provide a commentary as the tram passes by historic points of interest, like Barracks Archway. The journey travels to Kings Park, with spectacular views over the city, and across the river to Burswood Resort and Casino. If you take the morning tour you can stop over at the Casino or Kings Park for no extra cost, then catch a later tram when ready.
