That about describes my feelings about the current rail scene in Atlanta, as well as the logo on Amtraks heritage 1 unit seen leading Amtrak 19 through CP Taylor in Temple, GA.
After shooting 449 at State Line Tunnel I knew CSXT's Q425 was in Pittsfield headed my way so decided to hang around to see it. The tunnel would be pointless so I relocated to the actual state line a few miles east where it is open and I knew there would be light longer.
This is just west of the Flints Crossing Road at about MP QB161.9 on modern day CSXT's Berkshire Subdivision, the one time Boston & Albany Railroad. Until 1959 the New Haven ran a daily freight that interchanged with the NYC right here in this wide spot that was once a small yard. That year the State Line branch, which left the Berkshire Line main (modern day Housatonic Railroad) was cut back to West Stockbridge and the interchange was moved to Pittsfield where modern day successors CSXT and HRRC continue to exchange cars. Meanwhile West Stockbridge to Rising was abandoned in 1964 ending 121 years of service on the NH's State Line Branch, though the West Stockbridge station survives today remodeled as a fabulous coffee shop and cafe.
Alas about five min before the train appeared the sun dipped below the Taconic Hills shrouding the scene in shadows. Such is the season I suppose....and note the first hints of fall color further serving to remind one that summer is at an end.

Jacques Brel - To See A Friend In Tears
"So men are still at war in this land
For certain songs and certain dates
The tender gave way to the firebrand
And Europe gave way to the States
So now that money's all but scentless
Noses and consciences are clear
The pointless flowers can be dispensed with
To see a friend in tears
So our defeats are just reminders
Of death that waits behind it all
The body wilts before the mind does
Surprised to see how soon it falls
It's true our women have deceived us
All hunted species disappear
It's true we've shot the golden eagles
To see a friend in tears
It's true our cities are exhausted
Made by and for the middle aged
Our weakness gave them more than force did
We thought that love could cure a toothache
And in the underground we're drowning
Accelerating through the years
You think you'll find the truth by frowning
To see a friend in tears
It's true our mirrors don't show heroes
We lack the courage to be Jews
Without the elegance of Africa
With our youthful fireworks all defused
And all these men who are our brothers
Wonder why we don't want to hear
How their worst enemies are their lovers
To see a friend in tears"

Route 292 in Edgware.
Title refers to the fact today is Halloween - the most pointless event that there is - and that this bus is still yet to go out on its supposed home route, the 13.
Here's a story for you:
A mate of mine messaged me to inform me of this working - this bus had previously been on school route 605 after which it subbed a bus on the 292. I quickly left to go and get it, naturally!
After a journey in which all the connections worked perfectly, I waited at Burnt Oak for VHR45203 to show up. I saw it coming down the road, looking rather menacing as it did so - not unlike the LTs with which this bus shares a design they do bear down the road rather well.
Anyway, got on to Colindale where I tried to snap the bus. I would most certainly NOT recommend the Asda stand to any spotters at night because it is simply horrific with all the cars coming in and out of the Asda car park.
I also hoped to get the bus blinded for the 114, but was blatantly refused by the driver who simply said 'no way'. How kind.
So after not getting a great shot at Colindale I came back to Edgware where I knew I'd hopefully have a couple of good opportunities to snap the bus. However, works on the bus station meant that the Borehamwood stop was cluttered with buses and an assistant there promptly told me to go back to the pavement after I tried to get a snap down the bottom. Nuts. Luckily the light at the top here turned red as the SRM approached, so I was able to get this somewhat ok shot as my evidence for the working.
Turns out it's been quite a stressful evening!
This young buck lost one of his antler and the other one won't take long before it falls off. Not often I see this so that was exciting.

It was a productive day on the Northeast Corridor, with a few different schemes making an appearance. NJT ALP-46A 4636 sports the Pennsylvania Railroad look it crosses Philadelphia Avenue in Morrisville, on the rear of train 7855.
Not used for more than 60 years, the mainline coal tower on the CN Flint Sub that used to serve GTW mikados, pacifics, mountains, and the 4-8-4 streamlined passenger steamers, still stands tall. While its days are certainly not endangered as the demolition and cleanup would be too much of a hindrance on continuing to run mainline traffic, it is still worth the trip to see traffic, such as CN M371, pass under it just as the old steamers used to.
Pointless: Why am I keeping this image?
Pointless: Why did I take it in the first place?
Pointless: Why did I bother climbing down that slippy slope to take this shot?
Pointless: Why did I get up that morning knowing the conditions were going to be crap?
Pointless: Why have I even bothered now to post this on Flickr?
I really don't know!
Completely pointless

10 Things I Wish I Could Say To People:
1. I love you Mommy & Papa, for devoting your lives to me.
2. Even when I was just another stranger to you, you were nice to me, without once judging me. I'll love you forever for that. Nobody else ever bothered.
3. If once, just once, I knew you miss me as much as I miss you, all this pain would become sweet.
4. Sometimes it's so bad I want to run till my lungs burst. I want to scream. I'm scared of life. I wish you knew. Maybe if you lived a day in my shoes you'd never look at me the same way again.
5. There's no need be under any misconception that people are jealous of you. I only feel sorry for you.
6. You're the only ones who've bothered enough to stick through everything with me; I can't tell you how much it matters to me in life. Please don't give up on me.
7. I wish you'd just tell me what you really think about me. That way atleast I'd know how much to care about you.
8. PLEASE stop to think of how you make us feel. You literally make people's lives hell. Just because you're a teacher doesn't mean you become inhumane.
9. You are ruining your life... please don't.
10. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
I can't believe how many things I had to type once I got going.. I still have a billion things I wish I could say to people; but this tag really is so great. Venting it out here really made me feel so light. <3
Life without you is like a pencil without lead.......POINTLESS

Back in the days of vinyl records you could sometimes encounter a phenomenon known as pre-echo, if you turn the lights down and squint a bit you might just catch the photographic equivalent here...

So, what's your idea of a 'completely pointless weekend'? Mine is having a DVD marathon all day with some nice bag of chips on my side. :)
Happy weekend, everyone!

It has been a long time since we had a look at the O'Dea Collection, today we have a very interesting shot of a mail train in Rathduff. I see a flying snail logo and the words snail and mail come to mind. I dont know about you but I would rather receive a nice letter through the post rather than 100 e-mails!

With a cloud of dust in its wake, Amtrak train #1 is making every bit of track speed on UP's Houston Subdivision east of the Bayou City.
Just about 4 months later, AMTK 156 would be badly damaged after hitting an 18 wheeler in Lafayette, LA. The locomotive was towed to Amtrak's shops at Beech Grove, IN and has sat there ever since.
