Here is the medallion for Rachel's room. She wants a chandelier instead of a ceiling fan so this will surround the hole.
This particular medallion cost $8.97 at Menards while it's twin (or close to it) cost $22 at Home Depot. Why the difference? I don't know. You can get very fancy and ornate ones also of polystyrene/plastic. I don't mind because they go up on a ceiling so who really notices? The plaster ones are beautiful, but heavy and meant for the extreme home renovation enthusiast.

I use a splattering technique for the initial application of the plaster, so I like to use a wooden box (discarded dresser drawer) as a splash protector.

The plaster ceiling of this room was pierced as the room behind it was removed from the house. The grey light of a rainy day became a dim and subtle blue as it passed through the tarp which protected both men and house from the weather. Standing alone in the room with my camera during a silence, I could hear the raindrops patter against the tarp above — but the sound was distant, muffled by lathe and plaster, as though heard by one safe inside a cave as the skies unladen themselves outside.
