In the year 2011 I worked in a project in Iceland at a glassblowing workshop called Bergvik. Our assignment was to fuse together glass and clay and the overseer was Sigrun Olof Einarsdottir.
Here is something a little different to my usual jewellery related posts. I am a mixed media chick at heart and love to dabble in all kinds of media. I decided to have a day off today and indulge in some experimental play. I am aiming towards constructing a mixed media pirate’s treasure chest at some point, for future boxes or book covers possibly
Anyway I made some cool moulds from my ammonite ...fossil collection and a skull and cross bones charm, poured plaster into them,and painted them in acrylics. I think they have turned out really well, considering it was my first time outside of uni playing around with plaster – I even like the broken bits…. The results have set my mind racing and I am so excited to develop these experimentations further
I am edging nearer towards that pirates treasure chest …Ooo-Arrrgh!!
I use a splattering technique for the initial application of the plaster, so I like to use a wooden box (discarded dresser drawer) as a splash protector.

The Great Reredos, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. 1919-1924. "The Nativity": 4 ft. square. One of two panels on either side of the reredos. This plaster cast of the original clay model which formed the basis of the carved stone is on the north wall of Hanbury church, Worcestershire. Design and concept by Walter Gilbert. My first experience with creating a plaster mold of my face. I like working worth both the plaster and the porcelain. Not yet bisqued.
These are "Textures" I have gethered over the last two years.

Hammering on the roof opened up some plaster cracks.
Plaster crack repair. I use a steel Atlas steel scraping bar to chisel back the plaster crack. For bad ones where the brown coat is cracked (the crack is deep), I scrape all the finish plaster away in a border, use drywall tape directly on the brown coat, then after that dries I start to skim coat the plaster back into a nice finish.
