They say planting flowers reduces crime... I hope so. Either way it's nice to have color around here, it's a little bleak, not much living on our side of the street. Custom planter boxes by Ciprian... just call the store and ask (he's got a plan).
The blackberries and raspberries are really taking off and are slowly starting to block the view into the neighbors' kitchen. The underplanting is butternut squash and we are getting a bumper crop.
More and more of the peppers are turning red and are now visible. Thanks to sub-irrigated (self-watering) planters, there are a lot of peppers in this small 3x3 space on my fire escape. Read more....

I abandoned my cinder block planter idea in favor of an upcycled wooden planter box. Ray built it from 2x3s that were formerly shelves in the basement and covered the bottom with hardware cloth left over from building the rabbit hutches, so the only costs were a few nails and the soil to fill it.

CINCINNATI (10/16/2012) – Cincinnati Bengals players traded in their cleats for working boots to team up with United Way of Greater Cincinnati and the Marvin Lewis Community Fund for this year’s Hometown Huddle.
Today’s annual event brought together volunteers and sponsors from across Cincinnati to CityLink Center where volunteers constructed an outdoor playground and indoor rock climbing wall, built a community garden, finished landscaping, and painted outdoor furniture, among other things.
Since 1999, NFL teams have participated in a variety of hands-on community-service projects, known collectively as Hometown Huddle. The NFL-United Way Hometown Huddle is a league-wide day of service designed to bring awareness and impact to the issue of youth health and fitness.
CityLink Center is a city-wide initiative started by a group of social service agencies who recognized the need for integrated services.
