The inspection pit at Loughborough engine shed and LMS Jubilee no.45596 "Bahamas" gets a quick check over during the great Central Railways Autumn gala on Saturday 4th October 25.
The Pit, as it was called here in the City of Eugene before it was, after years and years of being "the pit" was transformed into student housing, and also, Lane Community College Downtown Campus. These photos I took before "the pit" which was once a downtown department stores basement was filled with gravel, a lot of gravel.
The Berkeley Pit is a former open pit copper mine located in Butte, Montana, United States. It is one mile long by half a mile wide with an approximate depth of 1,780 feet (540 m). It is filled to a depth of about 900 feet (270 m) with water that is heavily acidic (2.5 pH level), about the acidity of cola or lemon juice. As a result, the pit is laden with heavy metals and dangerous chemicals that leach from the rock, including arsenic, cadmium, zinc, and sulfuric acid.
The mine was opened in 1955 and operated by Anaconda Copper and later by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), until its closure in 1982. When the pit was closed, the water pumps in the nearby Kelly shaft, at a depth of 3,800 feet, were turned off, and groundwater from the surrounding aquifers began to slowly fill the pit, rising at about the rate of one foot a month. Since the pit closure on Earth Day 1982, the level has risen to within 150 feet of the natural groundwater level.

Dan really wanted to adopt this pit bull but "little" did he know this was not an ordinary pooch this dog this dog was a little trouble maker and he had super powers as a puppy he was found by a power plant playing inside a barrel of toxic waste he was found by some scientists they were puzzled how this little pup got into the barrel but they were more concernd on the side effects so they kept the puppy in the lab for observation anything could happen for what they don't know this pup could grow to the size of a sky scraper if the side effects were extreme the puppy was locked in a room after observation and a scientist opend the door and brought some food for the little guy but she didn't keep an eye on him so the puppy ran under the scientists legs and out the door that puppy was important to thouse scientists so they had to get that puppy no matter what the puppy saw the exit and ran as fast as it could the puppy was finaly free it ran to the streets but suddenly was caught by a dog catcher better with the dog catcher then the scientists the dog catcher took the puppy to the pound and put the puppy into the cage with the other stray dogs the puppy was feeling scared untill a beam shot out of it's eyes the pup moved back as the beam startled him the pup then knew that it had super powers so the pup staired at the cage door and a beam came from it's eyes and melted the lock the cage opend the puppy and the rest of the strays ran out of there cages and into the city the puppy ran and was blinded by a light and the noise of the sound of screeching it was a car the car stoped in an instant as a human figure came out the car the pup didn't know what to think was it one of the scientists or was it a dog catcher the puppy got it's eyes ready as it saw the human figure it was a boy the boy rushed over to the puppy and picked him up the puppy senced no threat in the human so the puppy decided to sit back and let the human take him to safty the human took the puppy with him and rased him untill he was bigger the puppy grew to adult size and it's powers grew along with the puppy now the dog knew how to use all of it's powers the human raised the dog well but some times the human teases him one day Dan went over to Jake and had a ball which made him excited Dan was preparing to throw the ball Jake was jumping of excitment and giving out playful barks so Dan threw the ball and Jake ran but little did Jake know Dan didn't throw the ball Jake turned around and saw the ball still in Dans hands Jake felt embarrassed as Dan was laughing Jake didn't like what Dan did one bit so Jake used his powers and shrunk Dan to the size of an insect Dan fell onto the ball Jake looked down at Dan Dan was starting to feel scared he knew Jake had powers but he didn't know that he would use them against him Jake put his nose by Dan and started sniffing at Dan and his ball he loved the aroma of his loving owner and his favorite ball Dan could feel the big gusts of air coming from the nose then Dan saw Jakes head moving up Dan could see Jakes mouth Jakes mouth opend Dan started screaming as Jakes mouth came closer and closer he was going to grab the ball along with Dan on it *no Jake im sorry. nooooo!!!* Jake now had the ball in his mouth he was actually smiling loads of drool was falling every where Dan was still on the ball coverd heat and toe in drool but unluckly for him he fell and was sent to the back of the throat he fell down the bottomless pit and into the stomach Jake was enjoying him self now he is free and he won't be teased no more

Yesterday I went to photograph Rally Telemark. previously I have been out on the slopes and photographed the cars whizzing past, but this year I decided to focus on the pit crew. While the cars are out on the slopes, the mechanics / family of drivers going around and listen excited about the new communications from the vehicle in the terrain. Tensions are high. The car that you see has just come in, having had an unpleasant encounter with the terrain, although it is quite crashed, was it on the road 15 minutes later with help from the pit crew
When this officer got called to take down a dangerous pit bull. He did the human thing and adopted him. Remember, despite the uniform we are just people too!
I really like this actually, it just makes me happy.
When you see this in person, it's one of those breathtaking moments where you're thankful that you are alive and able to see. It's one endless sea of white hills that fade into the horizon. It reminds me of a desert but entirely covered in snow
It makes me so happy to be alive and I'll take moments and memories that remind me of that any day.

Taken at Hitchcopse Pit, near Abingdon, this June. This is a very tiny grasshopper nymph (the sand grains and moss will give a sense of scale). He is in the act of eating a grass stalk. I love the delicate tracery of his wing cases.

Jasmine & I had just finished hiking and was driving thru this little town about to get on the freeway to head home. Suddenly, I saw these 7 pit bulls out for a walk, I had to pull over and take a quick pix. Not the greatest shot, but it was nice of them, perfect strangers, to pose for me. I was GLAD Jasmine was in my vehicle. Ha!

I've been digging in my archives again and I found this shot that I took in July 2008... at the Slave Pit in Stone Town... on the island of Zanzibar.
This concrete monument was built at Zanzibar's former slave market site. This was the location of the world's last open slave market and a very notorious place, where slaves from East and Central Africa regions were bought and sold. The trade in men, women and children was stopped by decree from the Sultan of Zanziber One June 1873, following the appeal made by Dr. David Livingston in 1857. The Cathedral Church of Christ was built by Bishop Edward Steere in 1874, and now stands exactly on the site of the former slave market and the high altar marks the location of the old whipping post!
I haven't had much time to go out shooting this past week... nor for Flickr... but I'll do my best to catch up on all your streams this weekend.
