I don't know if this guy had pipe dreams or not, but it sure felt ironic...
BTW, he'd made a heart out of change on the sidewalk there in front of him - a heart that wasn't quite completed. I felt that it was an invitation to contribute to his stash of change in order to help him finish his work... to complete his heart, so to speak...

So beautiful, but Aristolochia elegans is an introduced weed that is endangering the Richmond Birdwing butterfly, Ornithoptera richmondia. The butterfly mistakes the plant for its normal egg laying site, lays its eggs on the dutchman's pipe, but its leaves are toxic to the larvae.

i found this silk daisy nestled in the top of a rusty pipe at the back of our parking lot downtown quite a few weeks ago. this little surprise made me happy, and at the time i took a photo of it with the diana. today, i decided to see if it was still there... luckily, it was. :)
Here is my second attempt at solarization. I still need a lot of practice, but I like this technique. It looks pretty cool!
Print solarization is a technique where you briefly expose the paper to white light while it's still developing. You get a really weird looking picture. It darkens the image and the tones are partially reversed. It's kind of hard to explain until you actually see a real solarized print. It kind of looks like a charcoal drawing and kind of an infrared effect.
First, I exposed the paper on the enlarger as you normally would. I put it in the developing tray and I waited until the image just started to appear. Then I turned on the room lights for about 2 seconds while the paper was still in the developer. I finished developing and fixing the print as normal.
It's a really interesting effect. The grass and weeds almost look like they're glowing white, and some details on the pipe have actually completely reversed colors. The actual print looks better and more dramatic than the scan.
I definitely need more practice. I'm sure there are a lot of things you can adjust with this technique, like how long you expose the paper on the enlarger, how long you expose it to light, the development time, etc.
Technically, I think when you solarize a print it's called the "Sabatier Effect."

This is the pipe that has been supplying water to the neighbourhood for the past month. Workers came by this afternoon to say the work had been completed and we're back on the watermain. Getting cold water had been a problem while on the pipe. The water was solar heated on hot days so that both taps ran hot.
This is the most ornate Stench Pipe i have seen so far.
I have driven past this Stench Pipe dozens of times but today was the first time i spotted it and as i did not have time to get a photo i have gone for a Screen grab of Google Street View.
