As many times as I've heard pipe organs, I've rarely had the chance to watch people play so I can really appreciate how complex it is to play a pipe organ. So many keyboards and buttons and pedals and whatnot! The footwork was fascinating to watch -- there were entire passages of bass notes that were played entirely by the organist's feet.
20 Pipe Creek Mill / Weist Grist & Saw Mill / Marker's Mill
Carroll Co. | Maryland | USA | Dam & mill built 1805, rebuilt 1901 after fire.
Christopher Erb deeded land to George Mouse (Maus) in 1805 for the building of a mill dam on the Great Pipe Creek.
Jacob Maus (he reverted to the German spelling)inherited the mill from his father and in the 1820 Cenus of Manufactures, it was stated that Maus' Mill consisted of three run of stones, one hopper boy, three bolters, and one rolling screen (sifter). In one year, the mill utilized 7500 bushels of wheat, buckwheat, Indian corn, and rye to produce $6,187 of bread flour, chop for animal feed, and ingredients for distilling purposes.
The saw mill portion of the mill came about as early as 1825. In 1830, the mill was described as a 40'X 45', 3.5 story brick mill, with saw and clover mill on 244 acres of land. Jacob died in the fall of 1860; whereupon, the mill was advertised as having 2 run of burrs for producing flour, two run of chopping stones for animal feed, plus all the necessary equipment neededfor milling of either new or substancial quality powered by two overshot wheels, side by side, which made a combined measurement of 8 feet wide.

The mill was sold to John H. Marker in 1900. The mill burned the next year on November 24th, a Sunday afternoon. Damage was estimated at $20,000 but only insured for a little over $6,000. Damage could have been worse, but rain slowed the fires progress somewhat, although a frame elevator with 7,000 bushel of wheat, corn, buck wheat, and rye fell victims as did a rail carload of flour waiting to be shipped. The mill was rebuilt within the year by Marker, this time 2.5 stories of frame material on the old one story, stone foundation.
The mill sold to Henry Pietrich in 1919 of Reading, Pa. Next, it sold to William Jesse & Annie S. Halter in 1931. The Halters kept it in the family by selling the mill to Paul M. & Ruth E. Halter in 1938. In 1944, the mill sold to Jesse G. & Guida M. Imgram. The next sale has the mill being sold by the Imgrams to William C. & Emma G. Nevins Jr. in 1953; then, Joseph T. & Lillian A. Hardy purchasing the mill property from the Nevins in 1947, the year the mill quit operating. Widow Nevins sold to John C. & Patricia R. Kirby in 1970. The Kirbys sold to Richard J. & Linda M. Robbins Jr. in 1973. Ribbins sell to Joseph G. & Janis Lee Bahner in 1975. The Bahners conveyed the mill to Robert S. & Mary Ann Galandak, who owned the mill up into 1994, when the survey was done to enter the mill into the Maryland Historic Trust. Survey CARR-102. Perhaps they are still the owners.
Perched precariously on a hilltop, overlooking the Yalu River that for most of its course divides China and North Korea, is an enormous chimney stack and pipe combination, visible for miles around. It's monstrous form and seeming lack of purpose demands we stare. A peripheral distraction has tricked us into buying front-row seats to watch it wipe it's arse in public.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and fabricated adjustable pipe stands to support ductile iron pipe. Due to ductile iron pipes having non-standard diameters, each of the supports were custom fabricated per the customers' requirements regarding pipe diameter and elevation. All the supports were fabricated from carbon steel with an HDG finish and designed to provide nine inches (+/- 4.50") of adjustment and each support has an 11" x 11" base plate.
(Left) Cradle type supports are designed with an installed height of 84" from the base to the bottom of pipe (BOP).
(Middle) Flange type supports are designed with an installed height of 81-1/4" from the base to the BOP.
(Right) Tee type supports are designed for an installed height of 77" from base to BOP.
They will be used on horizontal piping and will be attached at their base to pre-case concrete pedestals. Each base plate has been pre-drilled to accept anchor bolts provided at the site. The pipe stand's threaded adjustment column will allow field personnel to adjust the height of each support. They can also accurately place the pipe at the required elevation without using shims or modifying the concrete pedestal.
I did a big bathroom redo six years ago. The two bathrooms upstairs are back-to-back. Completely gutted and redid the one on the other side of the wall, and redid floors and walls on this side. This drain was behind 12" floor tiles (on the wall here) and a nice 4" teal and burgundy pattern on the other side. Overall about $6000.
I am sitting fat dumb and happy until last week. While cleaning - we created a shower in the DOWNSTAIRS bathroom. Holy Cr*p!.
Contacted a good plumber I know from work - and he correctly told me what the problem was. I did not belive him as I "Knew" that we had replaced all of the old waste and vent pipes during the project.
I was wrong. This waste line from the (other side) sink was the OLD copper from 1966. Split. Ick
Lessons are:
1. Always replace all the waste pipe that could possibly be a problem. A $25 cost will now cost about $350 to repair!
2. When you take pictures of the project before the sheetrock goes up - make sure you actually print them off instead of storing them on a hard drive that crashes unrecoverably.
3. Drain-O is NOT the answer to slow drains - plumbers (not the liquid ones) are.
Should be back operational tomorrow, and holes patched by Friday

I haven't put much time into photography in the last 6 months or so. Pretty much have not done any editing, had a spare hour and gave Mike Shaw's blog (mikefshaw.blogspot.com/) a swatch and it gave me some inspiration do give a quick edit to a shot I took during the Fringe of a man watching one of the street performers. Its nice to do something vaguely creative for once!

Pipe bands are a long-standing tradition in Scotland and in other areas with Celtic roots. Many Scottish towns and villages, including those in the Scottish Borders, have pipe bands. The origins of the pipe band are obscure but many began in the military. The most common form of Scottish pipe band is made up with a section of pipers playing the great highland bagpipe and sections of snare drummers, tenor drummers and usually one, though occasionally two, bass drummers. The band follows the direction of the pipe major. When on parade the band may be led by a drum major, who directs the band with a mace. The music played by pipe bands generally consists of music from the Scottish tradition although some other pieces may be incorporated in the repertoire. Pipe band uniforms vary from band to band. However, the typical uniform consists of a glengarry or cap, shirt, tie, waistcoat, jacket, kilt, hose and dress shoes. Each pipe band has its own signature tartan that may reflect the area the band originated from or the history of the band. Competition is important to pipe bands and each summer many take part in Massed Bands where bands from all over march and play together. For over 25 years pipe bands from the Scottish Borders have met at Floors Castle in Kelso.
