Located at the southern gateway to Australia's Coral Coast, along the Indian Ocean Drive, the Pinnacles Desert of Nambung National Park is one of the major natural attractions in the region. The park is located roughly 200km, or 2 hours' drive north of Perth, and covers an area of 17,487 hectares providing natural habitat for an extensive array of native animals and bird life.

The Pinnacles are amazing natural limestone structures, formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. Over time, coastal winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars exposed to the elements. The Pinnacles range in height and dimension - some stand as high as 3.5m.

Early morning on Pinnacle Lake at Table Rock State Park in SC. It was cold - in the 30's - so the mist hung over the glassy lake creating an otherworldly feeling.

The trees have turned the most brilliant colors this year. I feel like we're in New England with these colors!

Happy Monday.

Tufa pinnacles in the middle of a vast desert valley.

ONE

These lonely tufa tower pinnacles stand alone in the middle of a very large Southern California desert valley. If you passed on the nearby highway and did not know they were there you could easily overlook them — though when you do spot them they make a striking sight.

Beyond their austere and striking visual appeal, they also provide evidence of the remarkable ways that the landscape formed. Despite being in a location which today seems about as arid and unforgiving as you can imagine, they were formed by water. This entire basin was filled with a lake a long time ago, and the towers grew around submerged springs. When the lake disappeared the towers remained.

The Pinnacles in Western Australia, a very popular place for photography. I have always wanted to shoot here and stumbled across it.

Damn happy i did.

This shot is 3x bracketed images fused together for a better dynamic range as it was midday when i got here and the lighting was damn harsh.

And then some BW treatment.

Shot with 5DII and Sigma 12-24mm at 24mm.

The Pinnacles Desert is one of the worls`s great karst spectacles where thousands of limestone pillars rise starkly from an ancient desert landscape. The variety of shapes and sizes and the changing colours during sunsets and rises, sets the stage for unforgetable moments.

An impressive if not bizarre sight - the Pinnacles at Crater Lake stand like tall, lumpy spires of volcanic pumice.

Some godbeams at Flatside Pinnacle a couple years ago during some peak fall colors. Not the best photo, but the beams are pretty cool.

A gem outside of Phoenix, Pinnacle Peak Park is scenic and very "Arizona." Unfortunately, our hike was interrupted by heavy rain... we enjoyed it nonetheless.

Always surprised you don't see more photo's of this rock formation on Flickr, they're quite grand and overlook a great setting :-)

Pinnacle Point vista panorama, Badland, SD

The Lakota (Sioux) people were the first to call this place "mako sica" or "land bad." Extreme temperatures, lack of water, and the exposed rugged terrain led to this name. In the early 1900's, French-Canadian fur trappers called it "les mauvais terres pour traverse," or "bad lands to travel through."

Still not super happy with this, but after 4 hours of dropping a golf ball into water and mopping up, I just called it quits. To be clear, the ball is actually underwater.

Trina Pinnacles in California was the scene for sci-fi movies near Ridgecrest. The Pinnacles are tufa formations towering up to 30 meters above the dry lake bed. Formed from tectonic pressure under the earth this area suffers large earthquakes at times.

Pinnacle In Fog

Ok, so its not the most unique composition of this famous tree. I couldn't help but get one of my own. The fog that morning was amazing, it was raining just a little bit which helped keep the bugs away and helped us to have this place all to ourselves for 30 minutes. After we were done shooting this spot we hiked up to the top to see the view and what a view I heard it was on a clear day!! when we got there... I couldn't see the ground it was so foggy and windy. LOL oh well. On our way down the trail we bumped in to Dave Allen . Always fun to see friends out on the trails.

Taken from the fire tower on Pinnacle Mountain looking South at sunset. The vast view is of Cherokee National Forest land. The town of Erwin, TN can be seen in the valley on the left. Hwy 26 runs through this valley linking Johnson City, TN and Asheville, NC. The mountain range on the middle right is of the Sampson Mountain Wilderness - almost 8000 acres managed by the Forest Service. About 530 of them are of old growth timber more than a century old. Its home to Buckeye Falls (a 475 ft drop) and about 5 different clear swift streams that carve the hollows. Its supposedly home to the highest population of black bears North of GSMNP. Saw one there a few weeks ago. The fire tower is quite easy to get to as you can drive most of the way, leaving you with a 20-minute hike.

This panorama is from a merge and crop of six portrait style shots.

Thanks for looking!!

Hiked up Pinnacle Hill for a sunset. It's wild how much harder the climb is during winter! Well worth it, though!
