Trona Pinnacles under the Milky Way. Trona California. When I look back from now over the years of passion that I poured in to photography I believe this image is my favorite. I say this for multiple reasons that go far beyond the final resulting image we see here which to be honest falls way short in comparison to the amazing night shots found here on Flickr by a whole host of extremely talented photographers with much higher skill levels than I.

This image was produced along side a very special friend who like myself also shares a passion for this art. Much of what we perceive about an image we have created ourself centers around the circumstances of the shoot. Who you shot with, where you were and how you felt at the time, the weather and a ton of other thoughts and variables about the shoot that simply leave you with a overall feeling that comes back to us every time we view the image. For me this evening was enchanted by the warm breeze and the absolute solitude of the evening that found us in this magical place with nobody else in sight under a night sky that was so vivid you could reach up and grasp the stars and feel their texture. No sound could be heard other than the wind cutting through the terrain and the gravel under our shoes. After we left this amazing location I spent the next three hours during our ride home dreaming of the digital bliss I hoped I had captured on my memory card.

Since the Dawn of Camera's (2012) I've not missed an opportunity to shoot Pinnacle Peak. It is the second tallest peak in the 24 peak Tatoosh Mountain Range and the most inspiring IMHO. It's height is 6,562 feet, but it's prominence is only 562 feet. I've summited it's neighbor twice and while Pinnacle is only another 150 feet taller than Plummer, it is a technical climb with scrambling involved. Three people have died since 1897 attempting the climb and mountaineers, (real mountain climbers) practice on it before climbing Rainier. I've stood on top of Plummer and watched an avalanche of rock go down it's face and still I want to go. Last years big hike was Indian Henry's, I think this will be 2018's. :-)

Pinnacles, Western Australia

At 759 m high, the Pinnacles have panoramic views of the bush, mountains and coastline of the eastern Coromandel. I got up at 3am to walk to the top in time for sunrise. At the start of the 2.5 hours walk, it was looking good, because stars were visible. However, as I got closer to the summit, the wind picked up and blew clouds up the mountain. I did climb up the ladders and metal bars to be right on top, but visibility was near zero, so I found a sheltered spot further down to see what would happen. The weather never cleared, but it got a little bit better with an occasional, brief gap in the clouds. Enough to shoot this moody scene with these two trees silhouetted against the lit up clouds.

Full disclosure - this is in fact a sky replacement. It was a bright (virtually) cloudless morning when I shot this. Other than that, the conditions were nigh on perfect. So I gave in and replaced the sky with one I shot at a different time that was basically all sky and no foreground.

This white granite pyramid was one of the first daymark beacons built on mainland Britain. It was built between 1801 and 1810 by Trinity House.

Few places capture the essence of the West Australian landscape as well as the Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park at Cervantes.

This well-documented site features thousands of limestone structures known as the "Pinnacles" and the lack of light pollution gives way to some of the best skies in the world.

Such was the clarity of night that the Zodical Lights was still visible 4 hours after sunset.

This is an extract from a larger 360 degree photosphere which is a combination of 80 individual images and took over 40 minutes to capture.

Pinnacle National Park - California

A morning hike in Pinnacle National Park, California. Such beautiful morning colors.

Over the Pinnacles Campground. Pinnacles National Park.

Drive through the Pinnacle Desert does not require a four by four but I though this picture looked a lot cooler than our rented grey Kia sedan. Again these limestone monoliths scattered throughout the whole region making the Stonehenge mystery a simple work to ratio issue - whereas here it is a WTF issue.

Sunrise shot of Pinnacle@Duxton

Completed in 2009, the Pinnacle@Duxton stands out as an example of how HDB confronts the challenges of meeting housing needs in an urban setting. Its seven 50-storey (156 m) high towers rise as high as skyscrapers and are linked at the 26th and 50th levels by skybridges. It is the HDB’s first residential project with sky bridges connecting the towers.

Built on the site of Singapore’s oldest Housing Development Board (HDB) blocks, its design and construction both revitalises the area and commemorates its historical significance.

I recently went to Cervantes for the night to check out the Pinnacles. I've been there a few times before, but not since I've been interested in photography. I watched the sunset from the lookout, but the lack of clouds in the sky meant it wasn't the most spectacular. The pastel colours in the sky soon after were lovely though. Here's one of the Pinnacles during the transition between golden hour and blue hour.

More from Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Arkansas. The tallest peak in the left of the frame is Pinnacle Mountain. This was the view from the end of a 1.5 mile trail we hiked out to from the visitor center. The river is the Maumelle River, a small tributary to the Arkansas River.

Wainman's Pinnacle is also known as The Salt Pot and is situated on top of Earl's Crag near Cowling in Yorkshire.

Pinnacles on the east side of Mount Babel, with the Consolation Lakes valley below

A beautiful sunrise at the pinnacles National Park in California. Never imagined to be treated to a beauitful sunrise but scrambling at the end to find a frame was a good adventure

Big thanks to Luke and Dylan for an awesome weekend away shooting some of the gems along the south coast of NSW.

On our way home the clouds and light were still very dramatic 3 hours after sunrise, so we decided on one last shoot at the pinnacle rock.

This is another shot at the Pinnacles - a bit earlier so lots of mist and not much light. Tried a less saturated style of processing to emphasise the misty conditions. Such curious formations.

Autumn has arrived here in Northern BC. This shot is of one of the pinnacles or hoodoos in Pinnacles Provincial Park. The pinnacles which were once part of an ancient lava flow have been formed since the end of the last ice age when soft basalt layers eroded away to leave a more resistant ash layers behind.
