Pinnacles on the east side of Mount Babel, with the Consolation Lakes valley below

In the middle of the falls, these people had been ferried over to the the huge rock by boat to view the falls from the middle.

So much water was flowing that clouds of spray filled the air creating this wonderful atmosphere.

Big thanks to Luke and Dylan for an awesome weekend away shooting some of the gems along the south coast of NSW.

On our way home the clouds and light were still very dramatic 3 hours after sunrise, so we decided on one last shoot at the pinnacle rock.

This is another shot at the Pinnacles - a bit earlier so lots of mist and not much light. Tried a less saturated style of processing to emphasise the misty conditions. Such curious formations.

Looking down on the Knight's Peak, the highest peak in the Pinnacle Ridge, from the summit of Sgùrr nan Gillean. Sligachan can be seen in the distance near the top of the image. This was the second of three times I climbed this peak, and the only one where we had views from the top.

Autumn has arrived here in Northern BC. This shot is of one of the pinnacles or hoodoos in Pinnacles Provincial Park. The pinnacles which were once part of an ancient lava flow have been formed since the end of the last ice age when soft basalt layers eroded away to leave a more resistant ash layers behind. A beautiful sunrise at the pinnacles National Park in California. Never imagined to be treated to a beauitful sunrise but scrambling at the end to find a frame was a good adventure

Was able to make to this spot literally a couple minutes before the sun was swallowed up by a huge cloud bank to the west...

The Pinnacles are amazing natural limestone structures, formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. Over time, coastal winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars exposed to the elements.

Located near the San Andreas fault, the pinnacles are part of the Neenach Volcano which erupted 23 million years ago. The park features unusual talus caves.

I didn't realize how long it would take the rising spring Milky Way to indeed rise above the Pinnacles - took about an hour longer than I expected on this rather windy night. BTW, I really like my latest flashlight with a spotlight capability - I could shoot it between the two closer pinnacles to light the ones farther away without blowing out the closer ones. Cool toy.

The pinnacles are the eroded remains of dunes formed from lime-rich sand blown in from the coast. There are various theories on how the pinnacles themselves formed: differences revolve mainly around how much influence tree roots had on concentrating the minerals responsible for cementing the sand.

The Pinnacles | Phillip Island | Victoria | Australia

Here is another photo I took out of my archives from my recent trip to Phillip Island, last year in December. This is my favourite location to shoot and if you ever visited this place you would understand why. I could not decide if to take the way down to the rocks, as the path was pretty steep and narrow, but as the light started to improve I had to do it.

Every time I visit Death Valley I pass close enough to these formations to see them standing in the distance, a striking sight in this otherwise flat valley where there was once a large lake. (They are tufa towers, formed when the area was submerged.) From time to time I detour to photograph them, but they have been a tough subject. I made this photograph on another of those detours, stopping between Ridgecrest and Death Valley before sunrise. The light proved to be challenging, but I had a few moments of lovely side-light shortly after sunrise.

The photograph is a liberal interpretation of the scene. Obviously, the subject is not really monochromatic, but I chose that route because it seems more dramatic. By the use of filters (here in software, but the effect is the same as we got in the old days with glass filters) I have accentuated the contrast in the sky to produce the effect that I had in mind when I photographed here.

Located at the southern gateway to Australia's Coral Coast, along the Indian Ocean Drive, the Pinnacles Desert of Nambung National Park is one of the major natural attractions in the region. The park is located roughly 200km, or 2 hours' drive north of Perth, and covers an area of 17,487 hectares providing natural habitat for an extensive array of native animals and bird life.

The Pinnacles are amazing natural limestone structures, formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. Over time, coastal winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars exposed to the elements. The Pinnacles range in height and dimension - some stand as high as 3.5m.

I've posted a couple of night shots of the Pinnacles already.

Here's a late-afternoon shot of the Pinnacles. Some - like this one - are 3m high.

All in all, a great place to visit, day or night if you have a day to spare while visiting Western Australia: weird limestone formations a couple of hundred kilometres north of Perth, in the Nambung National Park.

Tufa pinnacles in the middle of a vast desert valley.

ONE

These lonely tufa tower pinnacles stand alone in the middle of a very large Southern California desert valley. If you passed on the nearby highway and did not know they were there you could easily overlook them — though when you do spot them they make a striking sight.

Beyond their austere and striking visual appeal, they also provide evidence of the remarkable ways that the landscape formed. Despite being in a location which today seems about as arid and unforgiving as you can imagine, they were formed by water. This entire basin was filled with a lake a long time ago, and the towers grew around submerged springs. When the lake disappeared the towers remained.
