All of the hydrophones are turned off, and then one is set to ping and then one at a time, each of the remaining ones are turned to back on to receive the signal from the pinging hydrophone, The oscilloscope is used to measure the time from the ping leaving the transmitting hydrophone (the first peak on the left) to the time it is picked up by the receiving hydrophone (the peak on the right). This time is then used to calculate the distance between the pair of hydrophones.
