It’s the final lockdown? Or is it? Either way, there’s a song in there somewhere… But, while nothing is certain these days, let’s hope that we are at last emerging from the frustrating series of restrictions we’ve endured for the past year or so.
And as the pubs here in Glasgow's South Side began the long process of re-opening their doors, the next worry was the 'pingdemic', as it's been dubbed, had the bar/hospitality staff frantically checking their smartphones to see whether they needed to self-isolate or not after receiving a little message from the NHS app; and indeed management worrying if they did, whether they could continue to stay open, that could only produced further disruptions and uncertainty.
Worrying also as some pubs, such as my local, the Victoria Bar (m.facebook.com/pages/category/Pub/Victoria-Bar-1662614917...) have been a lifeline for many - and this particular pub serving the Govanhill area has always played a vital role in the community. There's always been a pub on this particular corner of Victoria Rd and Allison St since 1887 - and when the old pub was knocked down in the name of progress and new housing at the turn of the 20th century, the Victoria Bar (with tenements built above) emerged in 1903 like a phoenix from the ashes.
It's a pub's pub - old school with friendly and helpful staff and full of wisecracking punters. And the slightly myopic character invariably found half hanging out its entrance, with his trademark fag in hand, wearing his leather waistcoat, and forever checking his smartphone - though this time perhaps worrying he or the staff receive the dreaded ping! - is none other than Marius Lynch, the licensee holder.

Pinging City (屏東市) is a county-administered city and the county seat of Pingtung County, Taiwan. It is the third largest city in southern Taiwan after Kaohsiung and Tainan.
The area of modern-day Pingtung City was originally a village of the Taiwanese Plains Aborigines which they called "Akau", which means "the forest". After the expulsion of the Dutch, the village grew into a Chinese market-town called "A-kau" (Chinese: 阿猴; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: A-kâu).
In 1901, during the Japanese era, Akō Chō (Japanese: 阿猴廳) was one of twenty local administrative offices established. In 1909, this unit was merged with Banshoryō Chō (蕃薯寮廳) and Kōshun Chō (恆春廳) to form Akō Chō (阿緱廳). Beginning in 1920, the name was changed to Heitō Town (屏東街), governed under Takao Prefecture. In 1933, the town was upgraded to City status.
After the handover of Taiwan to the Republic of China from Japan on 25 October 1945, Pingtung City was established as a provincial city of Taiwan Province in December the same year. On 1 December 1951, it was downgraded to a county-controlled city of Pingtung County until today.
