With the temps pushing 70 degrees on this date, it was a pleasure to see the Pine Warblers and Eastern Bluebirds at Allen's (asparks306) backyard setup. A great day to get some shots!

I was surprised how long the snow stuck around in the lower reaches of Zion NP after Christmas. I took this shot 5 days after it first fell along Pine Creek with a view of the Sentinal. We were on our way to the backcountry office to get permits go down Pine Creek Canyon later that day. As you can see by the creek, it was flowing pretty good. Indeed, we were swimming right from the beginning of the canyon. Winter descents down slot canyons are always more challenging. Sometimes the snow/ice made it difficult or impossible to find the anchors and we'd have to improvise our own. But it sure was beautiful up there.

Large, plump finch of the boreal forest. Adult males are pink overall with two white wingbars and pale gray highlights. Immature males and females are not so bright but still subtly pretty; gray body with olive, yellow, or burnt-orange head and rump. Stubby bill with rounded edges. Breeds in open coniferous forests. Winters in a variety of wooded habitats, especially around fruiting trees including crabapple and mountain ash.
this tree is the centerpiece of our pond... my husband brought home a little sprout from a job in Manhattan in 1990..... it's been moved many times before it settled over the pond...
I will say, not the best choice of spots, especially when the needles fall and I'm forever scooping them from the filter...
My first two nights in Scotland were spent at a B&B in Ardnamurchan where the owner fed up to 6 pine martens every evening from a feeding table attached to her kitchen window cill. I think these wonderful animals even give badgers a run for their money as the most beautiful of British Mammals and to be able to watch them just inches from you is an extreme privilege. My thanks to Sally Dennison.
Since these were taken in a private garden rather than a natural setting, I have chosen to darken the background but this is a wild animal which according to the camera data was less than 5m away when this shot was taken.
How about a bit of colour for a Sunday morning, early morning in Finland just before the Sun broke through the trees

The Pine Siskin's have been eating the seeds in the Agastaches and other plants, lots of them going through right now, could be fifty or more in the yard at any one time.

I have been trying for years to catch a good picture of one of these little guys. Over the years I have seen a number, but have never before been able to catch a clean shot. They are fast and elusive and often hide out in dense foliage... but on this day I came across this PM that was out in the open foraging around, and for about 5 minutes he seemed to care less about my presence... giving me the privilege of getting a number of shots of him during that time period.

It has been a busy week - I shall sit down and catch up with you all in the latter part of the day ... my spring break starts after my last day of work on Thursday :)
...and instead of getting signs of spring, we're suppose to get some snow :(
At least it won't be here for long. The temps are too nice now for the snow to stay.

I love photographing the pine martens when we visit Yellowstone. They are so animated and fun to watch as they climb and play in the trees!

Seen at Sax-Zim Bog, a large (~300 square miles) region in northern Minnesota that contains large tracts of spruce, tamarack, aspen, and other hardwoods, interspersed with more open areas and even farmland. It hosts many boreal species not normally seen father south.
