For Mother's Day I created this wall hanging for my mom. I created it using a 2.00 frame, buttons, satin trim, ribbon, paper flowers, patterned paper and a piece of white trim. This is also an inexpensive way to create gifts or home decor.

The original building was clearly a chapel and probably Methodist, late Victorian (1890).

BACKSTORY: Got up around 7:00AM, made it out driving by 8:02AM and went out until 10:59AM for a total of 3 hours. Spent $84.25 plus ~$2.54 gas for 31.3 miles of driving (31.2 mpg @ $2.53/G), for a total cost of $86.79. We drove to 17 yard sales, stopping at 11 (65%) of them. We made 44 purchases (55 items) for a total estimated value of $724.13, leading to a profit/savings of $639.88. So in essence, we multiplied our $84.25 investment by 8.6. (Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $729.37 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $639.88 in cash that we saved. How long does $639.88 of disposable income take to earn, vs the 3 hrs we spent here?). Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $127.98/hr as a couple or $63.99/hr per person.

Does anyone know the original photograph used here? - it's rather elegant & romantic! - i thought it might be by Baron de Meyer or some such but haven't been able to track it down.

[I'm rewriting this because the original was a little daunting. --jon 2005-05-08]

Custom Flickr slideshow running in a picture frame.

I managed to finagle an old IBM Thinkpad 570E into an off-the-shelf shadowbox picture frame I bought at the local craft store, thanks to some tips from Ivan on MSDN's Channel 9. It was pretty easy, actually, since the computer itself is quite small. I just removed the screen casing (which actually involved disassembling most of the laptop) and taped the LCD panel (and backlight) to the mat. The rest of the computer is just sitting in the back (precariously--need to figure out a way to mount it--but the computer is quite light, ~3 lbs since there's no battery).

I was unhappy with the screensaver options because a) they didn't work for me, and b) they all suffer from API limitations. So, I wrote a quick and dirty ASP script that scrapes the output of the double-image HTML Flickr badge to get IMG SRCs of my pictures.. See the script for details. Add a META REFRESH, run in IE's kiosk mode and there you have it! The only thing is that it doesn't resize pictures, so you only get a partial for the larger pictures (which does give you some interesting crops!). Oh well. More work to come, obviously. Perhaps I'll rewrite it in ASP.Net so I can do the resizing, but I we'll see. If it ain't broke, don't fix it--yet.

UPDATE - 2005-07-13: I rewrote it in ASP.Net with image resizing to the size of the output screen. Source here.

It runs WinXP with a PC Card WiFi adapter. I use VNC to remote control it so I don't have to keep flipping the thing over to type. Set to autologin, add IE in kiosk mode pointing to the page in the Startup group, and voila!

Total cost? $20 for the frame and about 7 hours of work, most of which were unnecessary because I dismantled two computers before discovering I didn't really have to dismantle that much. Now I could probably do it in an hour.

See the inside here.

A corner of the huge painting behind the Dante bust, which I understand has a quotation from Dante inscribed round it. I can't remember what the painting itself was, but the frame is rather wonderful...

Did this last night and grouted this morning. View large to sort of see the outer gold beads.

Made these for a friend of my boyfriend. She is an older lady who just found out that apparently there is nothing doctors can do about her cancer anymore... She is very sad and depressed (who wouldn't be?) I understand it's the drop in the sea these frames - but wanted to do something to take her mind off of it even for a few minutes... On the other hand now that they are completed, I am thinking is this gift appropriate?? You know, frames=memories, memories=deseased... People tell me I am thinking too much, but when the person is in the state that is already sensitive, you never know what associations come to their mind...

This is a picture of my desk from a couple of weeks ago, it was really messy then but it's neat now. :P I actually like the editing on this photo, I usually don't like my editing.

Random Pix-Star Picture Frame - 1 (of 12) - Canon PowerShot G2 (2001) - Photographer Russell McNeil PhD (Physics) lives on Vancouver Island, where he works as a writer.

that 'framing a house' would be more involved than this.

This cute little frame was handmade by me using polymer clay over a little wooden frame. It will hold a 2.5" x 3.5" photo. It is actually the perfect size for an ACEO! The entire frame measures 4" x 5" and includes glass.

I've covered the entire frame in brown Fimo polymer clay and added texture. It was baked to cure the clay and then painted with acrylic and metallic paints. It features little puppy themed trinkets such as a fire hydrant, dog house, t-bone steak, spiked collar, rolled up newspaper, paw prints and bones of all shapes and sizes.

The photo is just a clip out from a magazine :)
