Not the most original selection, there are at least two other examples out there, but this is what I had space and time for.
With a painting, there aren't straight lines and well-defined borders, so the initial sort was by colour: blue and black, red and brown, greens, yellow, and cream (including white).
I also picked out obvious outlines and put them in a separate box, and these are what I started with. This gave me most of the outline of the maid, her left forearm, the edge of the table, the main seam in the yellow top, the waist of the skirt etc.
After that was essentially a pick and mix through the various colours in an attempt to fill in some of the gaps: the green tablecloth went together fairly quickly, as did the woven basket in the upper left sector. The yellows yielded the remainder of her top plus the breads on the table. The black and blue box created the skirt and the cloth draped over the table. Red and brown produced the jug, bowl, and what I assume is her leg.
The remainder of the green pieces filled in the left side of the background before finishing off with the cream coloured background to the right of the picture.
Note that this puzzle has a different cut of pieces compared to the examples above.

Huge thanks to all the community groups who helped to make the 2015 Pencaitland Litter Pick a great success. Thanks also to the parents who helped chaperone the various groups that fanned out across Pencaitland and Boggs Holdings, bringing back loads of flotsam and jetsam from the verges of our highways, byways and forest paths. Lastly, many thanks to Mary McCall, Head Teacher from Pencaitland Primary for her help and for the refreshments provided by Jane, Sheena and Patty from the Community Council.
