Tom and Yudi "Dennis" were playing with the air gun in the last days of our AP Physics C class. Dennis is an exchange student from China and the title seemed too good to pass up.
Year 9 students (Melissa Bailey, Caitlin Vernon, Robert Gibson, Daniel Horrocks, Georgia Brierley, Matthew Pearson, Bethany Field and Olivia Dadak) took part in the annual Physics Olympics at Bolton School. The day began with the students being split into two teams of four so they could compete against 21 other teams in 6 separate events.
These events included building a small boat that would float and hold as many marbles as possible, building a rocket and creating a tower using jelly babies and dry spaghetti.
It was a tough competition with students having to use their team skills as well as science and technology with the hope of winning a trophy at the end of the day.
As a school, our students did fantastically and worked well in all events gaining praise for their team work and ideas. Overall, one of the teams came third in the delayed timing task which involved them getting a marble down a slope in the longest time possible.
We'd been randomly talking about electromagnetism after dinner (as you do), and Lauren had checked up on a technical point in her university physics textbook. She was still holding onto the book afterwards, and I took the opportunity to grab this truly excellent photo.
Students in Andy Corwin's Engineering-Physics Class applied the basic principles of mechanical engineering to trusses they designed and built during the winter term of 2020-21. The final challenge of the project was for the trusses to be stress tested to see how much weight they withstood before buckling, to determine the ratio of the load held to the truss mass of each student's construction. Institute of Physics Ireland Top Students Awards 2019
Dr. Yvonne Kavanagh, Chair of the Institute of Physics Ireland, this evening presented Silver Medals to the top Leaving Certificate physics students and the Earnshaw Award for the best physics final year undergraduate project in Ireland. The event in the RDS was attended by friends and members of IOP Ireland together with the students, their families and teachers.
