This shot was taken as a tabletop exercise in October 2018, most likely because one of the theme–based groups I belonged to had chosen “orange” as the week’s theme.

I do not remember the technical details of the lighting, so I cannot describe them and post to groups that require that sort of information. My two Phottix Pro Indra500 monolights were certainly involved, plus maybe one or two cobra flashes, as well as modifiers (diffusers) and scrims...

This is another one of those photos taken with the “cheap” 60mm Nikkor macro lens, which proved an excellent performer at that distance too.

I remember buying it second–hand simply to use with the ES–2 film and slide reproduction thingy, which I bought but ended up never using, which is too bad as I still have some slides from the days of film that I could digitize... Now, with the announcement of the new 105mm macro and the new “cheap” 50mm (on which the aforementioned ES–2 fits), all sorts of possibilities will open up again...

What is for sure, is that I will buy that 105 ASAP... I’ve been waiting for so long for that lens! I even have created a Flickr group for it already: www.flickr.com/groups/14791323@N21/

In April 2020, as we were in lockdown, I tried to renew my approach of garden subjects by shooting available foliage and flowers in macro, but handheld and lit with a flash to freeze any movement as may have been caused by the breeze.

Thus, I placed one of my Phottix Pro Mitros+ cobra flashes (connected to a Godox PB960 battery pack) on a Manfrotto Nano stand and brought that with me as I walked around the bushes and alleys. On the camera was a Phottix Pro Odin II flash controller, which allowed me to set and trigger the flash remotely, without any cable, and that setup worked very well, from a technical standpoint, as the radio range is, I think, more than 100 meters and doesn’t care about walls or other obstacles as a line-of-sight infrared communication link would.

From an artistic standpoint, this new approach gave me some interesting results, I think. I will upload the dozen shots or so over the next few days, you can always let me know what you think in the comments... Thanks in advance!

MADE POSITION #3 & FRONT PAGE IN EXPLORE 11TH NOVEMBER 2010

This was taken on a shoot not long ago. One of my favorite pics for a while. Just love the expression. The catchlights leave a lot to be desired for but it just makes me chuckle every time !!

Taken with my D3000 and AFS Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR at 1/160 f/9 at ISO 200. SB28 in silver umbrella high camera left, Yongnuo YN-462 II camera right in shoot through umbrella (key light) against Lastolite 6'x7' Hilite illuminated with Phottix DGS 150. Setup with Sekonic L358 and fired with Cactus V2s.

The shots were processed in CS4 first and the B&W conversion completed in Lightroom 3.

Bottle from the Lampe de Méduse vintage from Sainte Roseline vineyard in Provence. I also have a more high-key one with a slightly different lighting. All in all, these attempts at macro shots of a bottle were not too successful, because the obligation to keep it macro constrains whatever “vision” I may have. I don’t have much of one to begin with, and having to keep it macro makes it even more difficult.

Shot taken for the Macro Mondays group, theme: “Bottle(s)”.

Strobist and technical info: One Phottix Pro Mitros+ cobra flash on a Manfrotto Nano light stand and MagMod Magshoe flash attachment in backlit Rembrandt position to camera left, 1.5 meters from subject and 1 meter above it, firing at ½ power through a 22 × 22-cm Lastolite “Joe McNally” Ezybox 2 softbox with double diffuser; and another Mitros+ cobra flash on a Neewer tabletop stand in backlit Rembrandt position to camera right, 1.2 meters from subject and at the same height, firing at ¼ power through a gridded Andoer snoot.

Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7 hotshoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Gitzo GR3543XLS tripod with Arca–Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Nikon Z7 camera body, Micro-Nikkor Z MC 105mm ƒ/2.8 S macro lens. Flashes powered by Godox Propac PB960 battery pack.

Senior session. Very last bit of light outside, very delicate…my favorite time to shoot. Lit with a Phottix Mitros+ inside an Apollo soft box. Triggered by the Odin controller. The light was changing by the minute so having the control of the light on the camera was huge. Become a Facebook fan.

Macro shot of a chainsaw replacement chain. This was lit with my Phottix studio strobes but I have no recollection of the lighting arrangement, so I will just mention it in the tags for the sake of those people who search photos on Flickr that way.

I am now reaching the end of the selection of photos from 2017 and 2018 that I intended to re-upload to Flickr. Tomorrow will be the last day of it, as well as the beginning of year 2019, of which I will also only re-upload a selection, in order to catch up. I will therefore keep that insane rate of 10 photos per day that I have been using since the beginning of this year (2021), as this is the only way to... well, catch up!

Thank you to all the kind people who follow me and accept to keep up with that pace. I am extremely grateful to each and every one of you. I would love to go back to the saner rhythm of, say, 3 photos per day, but it will be a while before I can do that, so please bear with me and hang in there for a few more weeks or months... We’re getting there! Thanks again.

This macro shot was taken in the studio for some theme–based group, back in September 2019. I do not remember which one, nor what the theme was! I have a behind-the-scenes snap (which I have also uploaded), so I can describe the lighting setup below.

Shot tethered with TetherTools bright orange cable —and extension! as my office, desk and computer is 30 meters away from that table... Fun, but not very convenient.

Strobist and technical: One Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a C–stand in zenithal position, 1.5 meters above subject, firing at 1/16 power through a Phottix Pro basic reflector fitted with 30–degree Andoer grid, 1.8 meters from subject and slightly above it; and another Indra500 studio strobe on a Profoto light stand in Rembrandt position to camera left, 2 meters from subject and slightly above it, firing at ¼ power through a Phottix Pro 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser. White card reflectors on two sides.

Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7 hotshoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Gitzo GR3543XLS tripod with Arca–Swiss Cube C1 geared head. Nikon Z7 camera body in zenithal position on a Neewer C–stand, Micro–Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 macro lens.

on a side note, my monopod, multi-boom, double folding umbrella combo is excellent when you are on your own. The monopod extends to 72", plus another 16" for the Phottix multi-boom, giving a good range of placement of the light source. I can hold the monopod setup in my left hand while holding the Fuji X-T1 in my right hand.

Male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) hovering near a feeder.

I took this photo almost a year ago (April 2015), but only recently rediscovered it in my Aperture archives. I decided to work it up because I liked the colors so much. The hummingbird's position reminded me of a ballet dancer en pointe.

Strobist Info: SB-800 at 1/16 (+1/3) in mini softbox from camera left. SB-700 at 1/8 through umbrella from camera right. Phottix Strato II wireless trigger on SB-700 with wired sync cord from trigger to SB-800. I don't have it noted, but I believe the background was the shaded interior of a cardboard box.

Note: I composited the eye in from a different photo of the same bird because the bird was blinking in this frame.
